‘Don’t say that.’

‘He might be, boss. All this “I’ll only talk to him” bollocks could simply have been this wanker’s way of pointing us to his body. People who die in basement flats like this don’t get discovered until the rent’s due or the cat finishes eating them.’

‘What can we do?’ Flynn said. ‘He’s not a suspect and as far as we know he’s not broken the law. We can’t just barge in.’

‘Maybe I found the door unlocked? Went in to do a welfare check?’

‘Didyou find it unlocked?’

‘No,’ Poe said. ‘But I doubt it’d take much to open it. Thing’s rotten at the hinges.’

Flynn took a moment to consider this. ‘Let’s go and eat,’ she said. ‘We’ll come back afterwards. If he’s still not in, we’ll have a rethink.’
