‘Not her, the woman her husband had been having an affair with. By then I think she’d started to feel guilty and was glad to talk.’
‘What happened to his wife?’
‘Nothing,’ Stahl said. ‘Which coincidentally is exactly how much money she got.’
‘Nothing?’
‘Police couldn’t prove she knew about the affair. And she couldn’t get any money for the story without admitting therewasa story.’
‘Bet that pissed her off.’
‘Not half as much as when her husband was acquitted on appeal, and he and the woman he had been seeing soldtheirstory, made a bundle and bought a house in Provence.’
‘Tilly, profile the woman who missed out on the money. I doubt she’s involved, but it’s something we weren’t aware of yesterday.’
‘I’ll do it tonight, Poe.’
‘And that got you a place on a national newspaper?’
Stahl nodded.
