Deep breath in. Relaxing breath out.

I all but had to remind myself to breathe as Chris held open the door to my beach house, allowing me to enter in front of him.

I should have been relaxed at the fact we’d already fooled around. That he’d already treated me to an earth-shattering orgasm the likes of which I didn’t think possible.

But being here, back at my place, knowing we were about to pass the proverbial point of no return, made all my insecurities from earlier reappear.

What if he didn’t like what he saw?

What if I didn’t perform as he’d hoped?

What if I didn’t even come close to measuring up to his needs?

As I passed the kitchen island, I dropped my clutch onto it. Sensing his overwhelming presence close behind, I turned to face him. My pulse skyrocketed when I was met with a look of unrelenting hunger. So powerful. So intense. So…provocative.

Tooprovocative.

“Would… Would you like a drink?” I didn’t even wait for his response before making a beeline for the wet bar in the living room. With a trembling hand, I poured a few fingers of scotch into two glasses. Actually, it was probably more than a few fingers, at least in my glass.

I turned around, extending one of the glasses toward him, the carnality in his gaze only seeming to increase with each passing second.

Without saying a single word, he took his glass from me. As I was about to bring mine up to my lips, he grabbed it, putting both on the bar behind me. Then he placed his hands against it, effectively caging me in.

“The only thing I want is more of you.”

Bringing a finger up to my face, he traced my jawline, his touch reigniting the flames within, my blood warming. When he reached my throat, he wrapped his hand around it, gently forcing my head back. I exhaled a shaky breath, my stomach in knots.

He slowly lowered his mouth. Every inch he erased caused my muscles to tighten until his lips landed on mine. My brain encouraged me to respond, to reciprocate like I had all evening. But my body refused to listen, too wracked with insecurity.

Pulling back, he studied me with alarming scrutiny. “You’re nervous.” It wasn’t a question.

“I’m not. I—”

“You are,” he interjected. “And if that forced kiss weren’t a dead giveaway…” He touched his thumb to my bottom lip, which I’d sucked in between my teeth, “this is. You always do this when you’re nervous.”

I pushed out an anxious laugh. “I know it sounds stupid, that it’s just sex—”

“But it’s not for you,” he finished.

I shrugged, neither agreeing nor disagreeing with his assessment. I wanted it to be just sex. What I wouldn’t have given for that to be the case. But my life was complicated. My experience with sex was complicated.

“Like I told you earlier, I’m not going to force you to do anything you’re not comfortable with.” He paused, pinching his lips together in contemplation. Then he stepped back, increasing the distance between us, and crossed his arms in front of his chest, his muscles becoming even more pronounced. “Maybe we’re going about this wrong.”

“What do you mean?”

“You enjoyed yourself earlier, right? At the overlook?”

Heat radiated on my cheeks at the memory of his mouth on my body. “More than enjoyed myself.”

“I think I know why.”

I smirked. “Because your tongue is a magic wand for orgasms.”

A brilliant smile lit up his face as his laughter filled the room, breaking through any tension. “I appreciate the compliment, but that’s not what I’m talking about.” Approaching me, he cupped my cheek in his large hand. “It’s because it was unplanned. I didn’t take you there so I could eat you out.”

“That’s so romantic,” I joked.
