He let out an uneasy laugh as he ran a hand through his hair. “Nothing like being forced back to reality. Guess we had to come down from the clouds at some point, huh?”

“If it’s a little too real for you, I understand.” I averted my gaze, fidgeting with the hem of my t-shirt. “When you first agreed to my proposition, I highly doubt this was what you had in mind. Some single mom with a fourteen-year-old daughter. Because, let me tell you, she certainly has her moments that make you want to rip out your hair and scream. She’s a teenager. And a girl. She is a master at the annoyed glare. Not to mention—”

A hand on my bicep caught me by surprise. I darted my eyes to see Lachlan standing next to me. He brushed his lips against mine, the simple gesture erasing my worries.

“I meant what I told you in Hawaii. And I’ll say it today and every day going forward if that’s what it takes to finally get it through this thick, beautiful skull of yours.”

He placed his hand against my back and pulled my body close. Touching my chin, he lifted my eyes to his.

“I want to be with you, Julia. That includes everything and everyone important to you. Like Imogene.”

He held my gaze for a moment, allowing his statement to sink in. Then his sinful mouth curved into a sly smile.

“We’ll just have to learn to be a bit more quiet when I’m screwing you.”

I burst out laughing, my anxiety and unease about this situation momentarily waning.

Then his expression sobered once again. “But in all seriousness… I understand this will be an adjustment. For all of us. It won’t be perfect, and we’ll make some mistakes. But we’ll figure it out. Together. Okay?”

I placed my hand on his chest, relishing in the comforting thump-thump of his heart. Could this man be any more perfect? I kept waiting to learn he had some horrible flaw. That he had a secret obsession with creepy clowns. That he slurped his soup.

So far, though, I’d yet to uncover anything.

With a sigh, I tilted my head back, lips skimming his. “Okay.”
