“I may not know much about her, apart from the bits you’ve shared with me, but she sounds like a pretty level-headed kid.”

“Kid…” I laughed to myself over the irony, considering the age difference between Lachlan and Imogene was the same as it was between him and me.

“Whatever…” He waved me off, shoveling more food into his mouth, his breakfast almost gone. Once he swallowed and washed it down with a sip of espresso, he continued. “It doesn’t matter. All that does is whatever obstacles we face going forward, we face them together.” He grasped my hand, squeezing. “Okay?”

“Okay.”

“Okay,” he repeated, lips brushing mine. But instead of pulling back, he coaxed my mouth open, a renewed hunger filling me when his tongue touched mine.

How was it possible for me to crave this man as much as I did? By now, I expected I wouldn’t be so desperate for him every minute of every day. But I still was. Which was going to make the next few days excruciatingly painful.

When the sound of the doorbell cut through, Lachlan groaned.

“Goddammit,” he hissed, yet not making any move to pull back.

“Duty calls.”

He hesitated, then reluctantly pulled away and stood. I did the same, about to grab our plates to clean up. But before I could, his arm looped around my waist, yanking my body against his.

“I’ve never wanted to stay here as badly as I do now. I normally look forward to road games. Not anymore.” He framed my face in his hands. “Not if it means being away from you.”

“But just think how amazing your first night back home will be.” I waggled my brows. “We’ll have four days’ worth of catching up to do.”

“I like the sound of that.”

I draped my arms over his shoulders, toying with a few tendrils of his dark hair. “As do I.” Tilting my head back, my lips sought out his.

I breathed into him, Lachlan’s hold on me tightening as his tongue tangled with mine. He moved a hand from my face, roaming down the curve of my frame. Lifting my t-shirt, his fingers traced my stomach before brushing against the swell of my breast.

My core clenched, every inch of my body throbbing with a yearning only he could satisfy.

The doorbell rang again.

Lachlan tore his lips from mine. “Bloody hell. One second.”

He stormed toward the foyer, pausing to adjust himself before opening the door. “I just need five more minutes to finish eating,” he told the man in a dark suit standing outside.

“Yes, sir. Traffic is light, so that won’t be a problem.”

“Thanks, mate.” Lachlan closed the door and stalked back toward me.

I glanced at his plate, which he’d licked clean. “Finish eating?” I crossed my arms in front of my chest. “Looks like you’re finished to me.”

With a sly smirk, he shrugged off his jacket and loosened his tie, his carnal look sending a thrill through me.

“Not quite.”

Before I could respond, he reached for my shorts and yanked them down my legs. Grabbing my hips, he lifted me onto the kitchen island.

As he slid his hands up my thighs, my pulse skyrocketed.

“One more for the road, beautiful.” Lowering himself between my legs, he flicked his tongue against my clit.

I closed my eyes, running my fingers through his hair as I moved with the rhythm he set.

“I think I’m really going to like road games.”
