I held my breath as Detective Walker pulled out a folder marked “Claire Hale” and took out a photo. When my eyes fell on my sister’s naked body submerged in a tub, blood staining the floor, I bit back a sob. But the sight of her wasn’t what caught me off-guard. It was the hand placed on her head, the touch almost…affectionate.

And on the pinky finger of that hand sat a ring with a giant S… Much like the one Dax always wore.

Detective Walker grabbed Dax’s hand and held the photograph up to it, the rings identical.

“You’ll be getting your wish after all, Mr. Hale,” Detective Walker directed at me. “It looks like we’ll be reopening the investigation into your sister’s death. And making an immediate arrest.”

Yanking Dax to his feet, he pulled his arms behind his back and secured a pair of handcuffs to his wrists.

“Daxton Shea, you’re under arrest for the murder of Claire Hale, Autumn Quinn, and what looks like quite a few other women,” he stated as he led Dax away from the house and toward a waiting police car. “You have the right to remain silent. If I were you, I would highly consider exercising that right.”

Agent Curran approached, his analytical gaze studying Detective Walker’s every move as he shoved Dax into the back seat of the cruiser.

“So this is good, right?” I asked. “Apart from the fact we still don’t know where Imogene is. At least we confirmed Ethan’s theory.”

He pinched his lips together, shaking his head.

“You’re not convinced, are you?” Julia remarked.

“It seems too easy. Too convenient. And Dax’s reaction seemed too…”

“Authentic,” Julia offered.

Agent Curran met her gaze. “Exactly.” He ran a hand over his face. “I guess one good thing came out of it, though.”

“What’s that?”

“We’ve got a serial killer on our hands. Officially.”

“Meaning the FBI can now get involved.”

“It appears so.”
