He moved his mouth against mine, coaxing my lips apart. As much as I wanted to resist, to bite his tongue so hard it drew blood and make my escape, it was too soon. Lachlan’s house was about fifteen or twenty minutes away on bike. I needed to buy Imogene just a little more time.

So I let him kiss me. It was soft, full of passion and reverence. Exactly the type of kiss I fell for all those years ago.

The one that masked the monster hidden beneath.

When I forced myself to moan, Nick deepened the exchange, his hold on me tightening before he tore away and rested his forehead against mine, his heavy breaths filling the room.

“You have no idea how badly I want to feel you after so long. How badly I want to bury myself deep inside you. How badly I want to kneel before you and worship at your altar.”

He ran his hand along the curve of my body, hiking up the skirt of my dress. When his fingers skated along the inside of my thigh, ghosting against my center, I whimpered, legs shaking.

Abruptly, he pulled back, surprising me.

“But we have all the time in the world. And I need to get you fed. Make sure you have enough energy. Then we’ll come back here for some…dessert.”

I glanced at the clock, unsure how long it had been since I saw Imogene speed away on her bike. It felt like enough time had passed, but I couldn’t be sure.

And with my daughter’s life at stake, I needed to be sure.

“But you know how much I enjoy dessert, darling.” I smoothed my hand down his shirt, continuing past his belt and brushing his erection. When I palmed his crotch, he inhaled a sharp breath, pupils dilating.

Hoisting myself onto my toes, I curved toward him, lips skimming his. “It seems you do, as well. So why don’t we have some dessert now? Then again after dinner? If you ask me, there’s no such thing as too much dessert.”

Pressing my lips to his, I made quick work of his belt and lowered his zipper. I resisted the urge to gag as I freed his erection and stroked him, making him harden even more.

He groaned, deepening the kiss. Sensing his growing need, I brought the kiss to an end, sultry eyes trained on his as I gradually dropped to my knees, my stomach roiling. But that was overpowered by the immense satisfaction I felt when I saw the scars around his groin, knowing I was the cause of them.

Parting my lips, I was about to take him into my mouth when he gripped my bicep and yanked me back to my feet. Panic shot through me, pulse racing, breaths increasing.

Eyes on fire, he leaned toward me, jaw clenched, his hold becoming tighter, more punishing.

“Is there a reason you want to suck my dick right now when you couldn’t stand the sight of me a week ago?”

“I…” I shook my head, floundering for an answer. Any answer. I knew there was a fine line between subscribing to Nick’s version of reality and seeming overly eager. “I realized I was wrong about you. About us. About everything. You were right. We’re meant to be together. I want to be with you. Only you.”

He grabbed the knife and held it up to my neck, spittle forming in the corners of his mouth. “You’re lying. Why are you lying?”

“I’m not. I—”

“Yes, you are!” he roared, blade digging into my skin. “I know when you’re lying, Julia. And you’re lying right now! Tell me why!”

He glared at me as I remained mute, wanting to buy Imogene as much time as possible.

As if able to read my mind, realization flashed in his eyes. “What have you done?”

Keeping a tight hold around my bicep, he yanked me down the hallway and to Imogene’s room.

He didn’t even bother knocking, throwing the door open to find the room empty, the water running in the bathroom.

Venom in his eyes, he dragged me toward the closed door. “Am I going to find her bathroom empty, too? That water’s been running an awfully long time. Has it not?”

“She has her period. Believe me. A hot bath is sometimes the only thing that helps really bad cramps.”

“We’ll see about that.”

Dizziness washed over me as he reached for the doorknob, my gaze ping-ponging between him and the dresser drawer where I told Imogene to leave a gun. I could get it. I just had to be quick.

When Nick opened the door, a wall of steam billowed out. I used the momentary distraction to my advantage, yanking the drawer open and grabbing the gun.
