Half an hour later, he was trying desperately to have a conversation with a blonde named Betty or Betsy, while an all-too-large portion of his attention was focused on Troy.

What was he finding out? Anything? Nothing?

Candy burst out laughing; Troy grinned sheepishly. Justin gripped his beer. He didn’t want them to get along too well.

He trusted Troy, but stuff happened, and Candy was very…

appealing. To use ludicrous understatement.

Justin gave up paying attention to Betty/Betsy and allowed his mind to wander. He’d worried his attraction to Candy came from her resemblance to Angie, not so much in features, but in the way she dressed and moved. But he was still hot for her tonight, dressed sweetly, and hot for her in jeans when she’d brought over the brownies, and hot for her while shoveling, padded in about forty layers of down and fleece—a bundle he could unwrap at leisure. She attracted him on a level he 116

didn’t understand yet, one he could only hope wouldn’t set him up for more pain.

Another half hour went by. One couple left to relieve a babysitter. Two others left to continue partying at a downtown club. Betty/Betsy gave up on Justin and left, too, as did Troy’s best friend from high school, Chad.

Which left Troy, Candy and Justin.

His dream come true.

“Well guys, I’m outta here.” Troy offered his hand to Candy.

“Really nice to meet you.”

“Same here. I enjoyed talking to you. Don’t forget Milwaukeedates.com.”

Justin’s stomach jolted. “You’re signing Troy up?”

“Yup.” Troy’s lips smacked on the P while he made deliberate eye contact with Justin. “She thinks the owner has some great and very hot women for me to meet.”

“Marie.” Candy was beaming. “You met her, Justin. She’s great.”

“Yup.” He smacked the P on his yup, too, because he was disappointed and a little annoyed. Did she get a signing bonus?

A free small appliance for every single guy lured to the site?

She must be swimming in toasters and hand-mixers.

“Can I use your bathroom, Justin?”

“Through the hall, to the left.” He could barely return her smile.

“Exactly where it is in my house!”

Both men watched her slender form leave the room, skirt swirling around her muscled calves. The bathroom door clicked shut; Justin broke the freeze. “She tried to sign you up.”

“She got right down to it.” He picked up a couple of empties and put them on a tray on the coffee table. “But I didn’t sense any manipulation. Nothing but an honest wish for me to find someone. Either she’s clean or she’s so good that you need to get away from her now, because a woman like that won’t even bother spitting out your bones when she’s done.”

Justin groaned. “Exactly what I’m afraid of. Though it would make the story—”

“I’m not talking about the story.”

“I

know.”

“She’s something else, man.”

“No

kidding.”

Troy whistled silently, looking down the hall where Candy had disappeared. “Yup. Send me that Candy-gram a-a-any day of the week, and I’ll—”

“O- kay, Troy.”

He chuckled and punched Justin playfully. “I’m safe. Not so sure about you, though. Be careful.”

“I will be.” He hoped. He picked up a couple of glasses and an empty pie dish. “You going to sign up?”

“Oh, for—” Troy pulled on his winter jacket, zipped it up to his throat. “Are you going to get on me about that again?”

“What can you lose? I’ll pay. You don’t even have to date anyone. Just talk to Marie and see who she matches you up with.”

“Aw, man.” Troy drew his hand down his face, a sure sign he was weakening.

“I’d owe you.” And maybe you can meet someone and get the disease called Debby out of your system.

“Hey, you have the exact same tile in your bathroom as I do.” Candy flowed back into the living room. “We must have had the same builder. 1938?”

Justin nodded curtly. “That’s what they tell me.”

Candy looked back and forth between the men. “I’m sorry, was I interrupting?”
