“Yeah, that’s her.”

She nodded, then turned her head and met his eyes, perfect lips curved in a half smile. He stopped breathing. She prowled toward him, stopped barely a foot away, head tipped back with a look of sensual intent—and a bit of vulnerability that haunted him. “Thanks for showing me your house, Justin.”

“No problem.” He should turn away. Go downstairs now, say, Hey, it was great having you here, Candy, and make it dead clear she was going back to her own bed. Right away.

Alone.

She put her hands to his chest and rose on tiptoe until her lips met his, pressed, clung, opened.

No. Yes. Oh, no. Oh, man. Her mouth was so soft, so sweet; it fitted his perfectly. He stood rigidly, willing himself not to slide his arms around her, not to get greedy caressing the curve of her hip, the swell of her bottom, not to think about the strong thighs under the flowery skirt.

She whispered his name, slid down the front of his body, hooking her hands in his jeans waistband until she was kneeling.

Oh, no. No no no. She rubbed her cheek against his swell-ing fly, pressed kisses to his straining erection through the too-thick material of his jeans.

Yes. He closed his eyes, gritted his teeth, felt her unsnapping his fly, fingers running up and down his zipper. He groaned, wanting his zipper down, his cock out and in between her lips.

No.

Not until he got to the bottom of who she was and why she was doing this.

He pulled back.

She made a small sound of regret, eyes looking up at him, dark with confusion. “What is it?”

“Candy.” He clenched his teeth and pulled her to her feet.

What the hell could he say to her? She was undoubtedly asking herself the same question he’d been asking about her in reverse: Why was he willing on their first date and not now?

“I, uh, have to get up early and work.”

The worst. That was the worst thing he could say. Even admitting to a raging STD would be kinder.

“Oh. Right.” Her smile was brittle. She stepped back.

“Right. Gotcha.”

“I’m sorry, that was stupid. The truth is, I’m not—”

“No.” She held up her hands. “Don’t bother. I understand.”

That didn’t sound good. It didn’t feel good either. He’d tried to be honest, too late maybe, but she hadn’t even let him finish. “Understand what?”

She jabbed a finger into his chest. “I know why you won’t sleep with me.”

Justin perked up at that one. Had she figured out that he was on to her? Was she about to confess? “Tell me. I’m all ears.”

“Because I’m wearing this dress.”

He could only gape. “The dress? What does that have to do with anything?”

“I’m wearing a nice normal dress and glasses, and you won’t sleep with me.”

“And that makes you angry because…” The part of him that had wanted to protect her was rapidly dissipating. Enough with the games. Had he learned nothing by bending over repeatedly for Angie’s boot? “What, it’s your get-lucky outfit and I ruined your streak by turning you down?”

“You—” She made a sound of utter disgust, staring at him with an expression that would make Cruella De Vil look like Bambi. “Yes. Exactly. My streak. It’s broken and I’ll have to start another one with a different ensemble and that really upsets me.”

“Oh,

no! ” He clutched his chest in exaggerated dismay. “I feel so terrible! ”

“I am out of here.” She thudded past him into the hall, then down the stairs. “Where is my coat?”

He thudded after her, grabbed her parka from the closet and tossed it to her, grateful to have escaped. Every trace of the sweet, seductive innocent was gone. This was Candy at her essence. Hell had no fury like a woman scorned, and he’d seen this exact display of irrational rage when he’d rejected Angie.

Fine. Good riddance. Candy had shown her true colors, and green was his, as in green light to go forward with this article without any hesitation whatsoever.

And when he found hard proof of Ms. Candy pulling this crap on men all over the city, he’d take great delight in making her, Marie and whoever else was involved, into targets of disdain and outrage for the entire city of Milwaukee.
