“You had no idea you had a kid?” he asks with skepticism.

“None,” I tell him with a shake of my head. “I still don’t even know who told the press.”

He seems surprised by that but quickly masks his shock. “So, what exactly are you wanting me to do when I follow her?”

“I want you to follow her to make sure she’s safe and listen to any chatter amongst your peers.”

“I’m not a bodyguard, Mr. Harrington. If you want protection, hire someone who’s qualified. As far as the other guys, you do need to watch out for some of them. One in particular is named Danny Salari. He’s ruthless and doesn’t care how he gets his money-making shots. Most of the guys are respectful, but he’s far from it. Some of the newbies will follow his lead but they’re not as seasoned as he is. I actually warned Ms. Pruitt about him a couple of weeks ago when she caught me taking photos of her walking down the street.”

I write down Danny Salari’s name to send to Thomas to investigate. “Do you really think Jenna needs a bodyguard?” I inquire because I’ve been toying with the idea of hiring one for her, but not sure how she will react.

“I don’t see this story dying down anytime soon, especially with you in town shooting a movie and spending time with your daughter. With people like Salari, I just wouldn’t take the chance. Hire one temporarily and once things die down, then re-evaluate.”

I nod my head while grabbing my phone and texting my sister to inquire into one.

“I can follow her and let you know if I see any trouble brewing, but the best I can do in that situation is call the cops.”

“And me.” I look him straight in the eyes to see how serious I am. “Here’s my card with my cell phone on it. Do not hesitate to call if you see she needs help. In the meantime, I expect daily emails of her whereabouts. If you know the people she is meeting, even better. If you hear any alarming comments from the other guys, call me.”

He nods and takes the card. “When do I start?”

“Now,” I demand, raising an eyebrow to see if he argues. He just smiles and shakes his head at me.

“What’s your endgame with all of this, Harrington?”

I pause before answering, wanting to craft my words wisely without revealing too much information. “To protect my daughter and her mother.”

Chase Wilson doesn’t need to know that my true intentions are to win my family back.
