I smile in satisfaction at seeing how happy she is and turn to get a glimpse of Jenna. Her mouth is open in awe while she drinks the scenery in.

“What do you think?” I ask, hoping that she’s as happy as our daughter is.

“This is incredible,” she murmurs and looks at Robert. “Amazing job, Robert.” He nods his thanks at her before following Avery to show her the snacks. Jenna turns toward me, and I can see the appreciation in her eyes. “You didn’t have to do this, Cal.”

“I wanted to do something memorable before our days together become inconsistent.”

“Every day she’s had with you so far has been memorable.” Her words leave me speechless, and I realize that’s exactly the affirmation that I needed to hear, and this coming from her makes my heart race. She glances over at Avery when we hear her laugh at something Robert says to her as she looks down at her watch.

“I better get going.” She smiles politely at me and is about to say goodbye when I quickly grab her hands and grasp them tightly, fearing she will pull away from me.

“Stay,” I whisper to her, my eyes staring into hers, begging her not to leave. I need her to be here with us. I need her to see the family we can be.

Stay with me forever,my heart silently screams.

“I can’t,” she whispers back with a sad smile and my heart deflates like a balloon losing all of its air. “I promised Jax I would be at his game tonight.”

I simply nod and let go of her hands before turning away from her because it hurts too much to look at her. I watch silently as she says goodbye to Avery and Robert, and I barely acknowledge when she confirms what time she will be back to pick Avery up.

When the door shuts after her, it feels like half of my heart just disappeared. I play Robert’s words from earlier over in my head to try to remain hopeful that soon Jax Morrow will be out of our lives.
