“I’m sorry, Jenna. I shouldn’t have done that,” I whisper in regret. “I was scared and angry when we couldn’t find you and I needed you to understand the real reason why Mason was here. Last night’s incident just moved up the process of him arriving sooner.”

“Why didn’t you tell me about the photo? When did we get it?” she questions softly and I know it’s time for me to be honest and reveal the truth.

“It arrived in the mail last week. Robert found it and immediately called me. I went to the police, who got the FBI involved. They tested it for fingerprints, but it came up empty.”

“Last week?” She lifts her head from my chest, her eyes filled with disbelief. “Cal, you can’t keep these things from me!”

Disappointment at my actions consumes me and I grimace. “You’re absolutely right, Jenna. But with everything that’s been going on, I wanted to shield you from it and hope it wouldn’t happen again. I know that was wrong,” I admit, hoping she hears how sincere I am.

“You must communicate with me, Cal. I can’t be left in the dark about something so serious, despite you wanting to protect me from it.”

I nod, knowing I need to do better at telling her things instead of keeping things private in order to protect them. “Can we make a pact that we’ll both work on communicating better with each other?” I ask with a raised eyebrow and she nods her agreement.

“Good.” Without thinking, I lean down and kiss her forehead. She inhales sharply and my gaze is drawn to those lips. I watch her tongue slowly peek out and lick her lips, my dick throbbing at the memory of what it felt like to feel that tongue and those lips against mine. I look up and notice her eyes are dark and dilated and she’s staring at me in hunger, just as I’m with her. Desire replaces her sadness and I bend my head, hypnotized with the need to kiss her. I’m inches away from her when a loud knock on the door stops me.

“Cal, your agent keeps calling you.” Robert’s muffled voice says.

“Be right there,” I respond hoarsely, annoyed at the interruption. I sigh and lean my head back because I know Philip won’t stop calling until he hears an update on Jenna. He called asking why I wasn’t at work, so I had to update him on what was going on.

I look back down at her and smile. As badly as I want to kiss her, I know now’s not the time. She’s an emotional mess from the past forty-eight hours and just coming off a breakup. When I kiss Jenna, I want her to kiss me back with a clear head and heart. “Why don’t you get freshened up and then come out so we can talk about how we are going to utilize Mason.” She seems like she’s in a daze and slowly nods her head. We untangle our arms and help each other up from the floor.

I exit her bedroom and close the door behind me for her to have some privacy. For the first time in hours, I smile, the feeling of hope back in my heart again because I know if we can survive this and come out together, then we will survive anything more that’s thrown our way.
