“Happy Valentine’s Day, Firecracker.”

“Back at you, Jack. Thanks for the flowers. But how did you know where to send them? You stalking me?”

“Nope. I asked Leigh to send them. I’m abiding by your rules. For now.”

“Mm.”

“Damn it,” I hiss.

“What?”

“That little noise you make. It drives me crazy.”

“I’ll have to remember that,” she whispers. “Anyway, how was your day?”

The giggle she makes at doing a complete one-eighty in our conversation also fucks me up.

“It was good. Mostly just classes and work.”

“Do you like working for your dad? Whatever it is you do…”

“I told you before, if I tell you that, you could probably guess who I am. Again, abiding by your rules.”

She sighs. “Fine. But do you?”

“Uh, complicated question. I don’t have a bad relationship with my dad, but it’s a work in progress. I like it more than he thinks I do.”

“Do you tell anyone but me what you’re really thinking?”

Lying back on my bed, I take a deep breath. “Depends. I was talking with my ex the other day about how we didn’t always communicate very well. We’re better at it now. But I’m still not looking to spill my soul to most people. It’s different with you. It has been since our first conversation. I want you to know… everything. God, I sound like an idiot.”

“You sound sweet. And I happen to like it. A lot.”

“I like you a lot,” I say in an overly sultry voice.

“Cheesy. But I like you a lot, too.”

“How was your day?”

“Uh…” she trails off, making a little garbled noise.

“Firecracker, this talking about stuff goes both ways.”

“I know. It’s just… it’s Valentine’s Day. I’ve never had a date for V-Day before, even if it isn’t a typical one. I don’t want to bring it down.”

“Tell me,” I whisper.

“Okay, uh, you know I’ve been doing some clinical rotations. I was in the ER today and witnessed someone die.”

“Oh, damn.”

“Yeah. It was the first time I ever questioned my desire to be a nurse. You know, it doesn’t matter how many times I remind myself that death is a part of life, and especially this career, it’s still hard. And today… I couldn’t keep my cool.”

“What happened?”

“After the moment was over, I went to the bathroom and threw up. It makes me scared I’m not cut out for this.”
