“Really?” he asks, surprised.
Emotion clogs my throat again, but I need him to know this. “I love you, Brade. I always will. I used to think that love wasn’t as powerful because it wasn’t romantic, but now I realize the love we have is bigger than all that. It’s the forever kind of love. The kind where you choose someone over and over and never give up.” I give him a little smirk and say, “Even when they are being a raging asshole.” He smiles back at me and I give his hand a squeeze. “We’re still in this together. Together just looks a little different now.”
“I think I’m okay with that.” He rests his head against the bed and sighs. “So, who else is here?”
“Gosh, everyone has been at some point. Hell, Rae and Trevor brought us breakfast the first morning. Oh, and Marion and Andre Barnes brought food for lunch earlier today. You have a whole community here to support you. Plus all of us. Your parents, of course, have been here the whole time. Your brother has been too. My parents, Micah, and Jenna, have all been here. So has Noah. Vince and Leigh have been here most of the time. And, of course, Nick hasn’t left the hospital either.”
His eyes widen in disbelief. “Nick? Really? He—I’m surprised. He pretty much told me never to speak to him again.”
“And he regrets it—wait, has he not been in to see you?”
He shakes his head. “No.”
That chickenshit.
“I’ll take care of this,” I say, rising from my chair.
“Maia—”
I lean down and kiss his cheek. “I’m gonna head out in a bit. Text or call me if you need to talk or get bored, okay? And Nick will be in shortly.” I give him a smile and a wink and walk out of the room, finally convinced that somehow,things aregoing to be okay.
