”Is that from him?”

“What?”

I nod toward the envelope.

She lets out a bitter laugh. “Nope. My mother.”

My eyes go wide and I drop my sandwich onto the foil it was wrapped in. “What? What does it say?”

“I don’t know. I haven’t read it.”

“Are you going to?”

She folds her arms over her chest. “No.” Her eyes meet mine and her arms drop again. She nibbles at her grilled cheese before saying anything else. “No. There’s nothing in that letter I need to read. She told Abuelita she wanted to get in contact with me. Abuelita wouldn’t give her my number, so she wrote a letter with whatever bullshit she wanted to say to me in it. There’s nothing meaningful in there. If she truly wanted to be a part of my life, she wouldn’t talk about doing it. She wouldn’t send letters. She’d be here.”

I blink a couple times, taking all that in.

She sighs, then says, “I need soup.”

“Which kind?”

“Both. All of it. Feed me.”

We both chuckle, and as we dig into some soup, I rest my head against hers.

“I’ve missed you,” she whispers.

“I missed you, too. No matter how messy our lives get, I don’t ever want to lose this.”

“Me either. Especially now.” Her hand drops to her stomach. “Harper’s best friend will be here in eight months.”

We both laugh at that.

“Mm. I think they should be cousins. Harper isn’t Vince’s, but we’re going to raise them like family.”

“Yeah, we don’t need them falling in love as kids and everything ending up a mess.”

We fall into a fit of laughter at that.

“Family is the most important thing anyway,” I say softly.

Her eyes go to the letter for a moment before coming back to me as her hand drops to her stomach. “Yes, it is.”
