Not Perfect

Maia

Theheatoftheblacktop scorches my feet as I dash across the driveway.

“Maia Giana Barone!” my dad yells out the kitchen window. “Put some goddamn shoes on!”

I stop in place and stare at the window, remembering all too well how he yelled at me to put the box of sheets down when Braden and I moved into the apartment. My, how things have changed since then.

Ouch.Right. Hot blacktop. I hop off to the side and continue back to the apartment on the grass instead. I didn’t figure I needed shoes, just running over to the house, but blacktop is hot in the midsummer sun, apparently.

“Hey,” Jenna says as I walk back inside. “You ready for this?”

I give a little shrug.Of course, I’m ready.Doesn’t mean I’m not a little bit scared. I mean, Vince has been living with me since I asked him to move in a couple of weeks ago, and arguably, since we first got together. But this is official. And the last time I moved in with a boy, it didn’t go so well. Freaking hell, I’m not even nineteen yet and I’m moving in with my second boyfriend. My life is weird.

Changing the subject because I am not in the mood for one of Jenna’s ridiculous, sassy, but surprisingly, wise talks, I say, “How are you enjoying living with Brett?”

She visibly swoons and drops onto the couch. “It’s amazing. I love it. Love waking up in bed with him. Love falling asleep in his arms. Love having sex in the kitchen! And, you know, just being with him. I’m crazy in love with him. It’s terrifying but exciting.”

I can’t help but smile at that. I understand the feeling. “I’m glad.”

“Honey, I’m home.”

I turn to see Vince strolling through the door in a tight white tee, black exercise shorts, hair pulled back, and a vibrant smile on his face. Those blue eyes land on me and I’m a puddle.

“Hi,” I breathe, ready to mount him like Jenna isn’t standing in the room.

“My truck’s all ready to be unloaded. Nick and Micah are ready to go. I think your dad even tapped Jonathan to help—for once.”

“He’s old enough now,” I say, still enamored.

“Brett should be here in a few minutes too, so it should go quickly,” Jenna says. She eyes us and stifles a laugh. “I’ll be outside.”

She walks out the door. Vince leans back to make sure she’s gone, then he strides over to me and pulls me into his arms. “Hey, gorgeous.”

I open my mouth to respond, but no actual words come out, just some syllables.

“What was that?” His lips brush my ear and I melt against him. This must be what heaven feels like.

Mustering all my strength and focus, I press onto my toes and capture his mouth in a steamy kiss. His hands slide down to my ass as his tongue possessively sweeps my mouth.

“Hey guys, where’s the—oh, for fuck’s sake, can you at least wait untilafterwe leave?” Nick groans.

We pull apart, both smiling like idiots. I try to step back, but Vince holds me in place. That’s when I feel a particularly hard muscle pressing against me.

“Cool off,” I tease.

He growls in my ear.

I’m not cool. Everything is pounding, throbbing, hot, and steamy. Good Lord.

Vince clears his throat. “We’ll be down in a sec.”

Nick drops his shoulders and cocks an eyebrow in annoyance. “Like an actual second or a we-need-to-have-a-quickie-first second?”

“Uh… the first one?”

“Great. Meet ya down there. Bring some water bottles with you. Thanks. Happy humping!”

My head drops against Vince’s shoulder as we laugh.

“Ready to do this?” he asks.

I look down. “Are you?”

“Ha ha. Let’s go.”

He takes my hand and leads me from the apartment and I try to focus on the happy fluttering butterflies instead of the anxious feelings twisting in my gut.

I just don’t want this to end the way the last time did.
