I can’t believe her. Asking about Nick.

God!

But I shouldn’t have gone there and expected her to understand. I’d have gone insane staying with her, anyway. I’m tired of fawning, and she’d be hovering over me nonstop, trying to get me to tell her what’s wrong.

I can’t even begin to explain all the things that are wrong.

Which is why I need to take a step back. Focus on me and my baby. That’s all. No counting on other people. Mostly. I suppose I need to allow someone in, or I’m going to be living on the streets.

That’s why I find myself driving down the gravel driveway at the last person’s house I thought I’d go to.

After parking, I grab my bags out of the back and walk to the front door. The maroon and black accents to the white house feel more imposing than normal. But this might be the one place I can exist without being pushed or treated like a basket case.

I square my shoulders and knock on the door.

A muffled, “Coming!” comes from inside. Then the door swings open. Her vibrant red hair is the first thing I see. When our eyes meet, her brow furrows.

“Hi. I know this is out of nowhere but—” I will the emotion to stay deep inside as I attempt to exude confidence. “Could I stay here?”

She glances down at my bags, then back at me. I can see the confusion and uncertainty in her eyes, but she doesn’t push me.This is why I came here. “Of course, honey. Come on in.”

Veronica steps to the side and welcomes me into the house, and for the first time in days, I feel like I can breathe normally again.
