“Feel free.”

He’s way too amicable about everything. But he doesn’t know the clincher yet.

I take a deep breath. “And how do u feel about dogs?”

“Love them.”

“Even the older ones who might be a little...” I hesitate, then decide I better just lay it all on the line.“…incontinent?”

A few moments pass before I get his reply, and I think I’ve lost him. He’s probably picturing coming home from a day on the beach only to discover that his duffel bag is covered in piss.

Which, I’ll admit, is pretty close to what happened to one of my previous housemates. But for the record, Ihadwarned her to keep her backpack off the floor.

Then my phone lights up again with his reply.

“What’s a little piss among friends?” he writes.

I chuckle at his response, something that I could imagine my brother replying.

I hate that I find myself liking this guy—a guy who rejected me, unable to even wrap his head around the concept of taking me on a date.

Pondering for a moment, I stretch my legs out in front of me, letting my eyes lazily drag over to the sight of my wonderfully imperfect dog rolling in something. “No, no, Junie,” I shout, and she stops immediately just as my phone chirps with another text from him.

“Can u give me the person’s phone #?” he’s asking me.

Well, here we go. I nod to myself as I tap in the words, “U already have it.”
