“My team didn’t have my back?”

“Yeah. Do you think that your brother’s SEAL team or my Ranger battalion oranyof us don’t have someone who falls apart on a mission sometimes? That’s why there’s a team. The instant you started to crumble, someone else should have stood up and taken over. That’s what teams do. Were you alone with that client in that conference room?”

“No. I had a…” My voice trails a moment. “…a team. But I was leading the team.”

“You think our Colonels are perfect? Ha!” He scoffs. “Everyone’s human. Your team should have been there for you. And they weren’t. And if I were the client, that’swhy I would have dropped your firm. Not because of you. But because they didn’t have your six—your back.”

“I never thought about it that way.”

“I’m surprised your brother didn’t point that out. It’s kind of the military way of looking at it.”

I shake my head. “Oh, Harris doesn’t even know why I left my job. None of my family does. I let them think I quit. I wouldn’t want him thinking he was worrying me like that or taking any part of the blame. They all just think I hated the business and decided to completely shift gears.”

His face falls. “Really?”

I shrug in answer.

He takes my hand. “Millie, that’s a little much to deal with on your own.”

As though on cue, my dog leaps up onto my bed between us, making me break my hold on Dax.

I laugh. “That’s Junie’s way of telling you that I wasn’t alone for long. Why do you think I adopted her? Best support system I’ve ever had.” But as I say it, I’m realizing how nice it is to have someone who listens and actually can reply with more than a lick or a tail wag.

“And,” I feel the need to add, “if I don’t get my support system out back, she’s likely to christen my bed in the worst way possible.”
