“He wanted to know if I was trying to kill myself and I guess it finally got through to me what I’ve been doing. If he’s been a little over the top lately it’s just because he cares.”
“Too much sometimes I’d say Dani. Ah, I do believe big brother is heading our way,” he grinned as the music stopped. “And since he’s already annoyed with me, I might as well take it a step further,” he added as he dipped his head and kissed her, on the cheek but to those looking on it appeared differently.
“What did I say about kissing my wife, Tyler?” Luke stated behind them. His voice held just a bit more edge than necessary and Dani stepped back sending him a smile for the sake of the others in attendance.
“But she’s so gorgeous Luke, I simply can’t resist.”
“Try harder,” he said as his eyes flashed ice towards him.
“Dance with me?” she asked holding out her hand to Luke to diffuse the tension.
Luke pulled her into his arms as the music began and she rested her head against his chest, giving into need. His body was tense, and she knew it would make the papers if they were photographed like this.
“Luke, let it go, please. You know how Ty is; he will chase anything with female parts but he’s not stupid.”
“Sorry,” he said letting out a slight sigh as he forced himself to look down at her. “I simply hate that sometimes you look happier with him than you ever have with me. What did he say to upset you though?”
“Nothing…”
“Dani, I know you, there was pain splashed across your face. What did Tyler say to you?”
“He asked if I was pregnant, okay?” she said barely above a whisper. “I told him about what happened, and he backed off.”
“I’m sorry,” he said again. “So, what else did you discuss?”
“Let’s see, he asked why you were being so overprotective, more so than normal, which led to that question, which led to him apologizing.”
“And why were his eyes resting on your cleavage then?” he inquired slipping a hand behind her head.
“He made a comment about my weight.”
“He’s noticed too. Then we’ll simply have to change that, won’t we? Dani, you have to start eating, no more exercising, and certainly no more skipping meals.”
“You do remember that this is how most of our fights begin, you telling me that I have to or can’t do something and since we’re in public…”
“There’s only one way to put it off,” he stated before he covered her lips with his.
Now this Dani knew would end up in the tabloids, it always did. Her arms found their way up around his neck and she allowed herself to let go and gave into it.
Luke forced himself to end the kiss; they were at a charity event not at home he reminded himself. He pulled her tighter against him and waited for the dance to end.
Dani sighed allowing a genuine smile to settle on her lips as she rested her head against his chest loving the way his arms felt against her bare skin shown off by the plunging back of her dress. She felt him lower his head and rest his cheek against her hair and she wished they could remain like this forever.
