Chapter 6

“He’ll be alright Mrs. Nolan,” Arielle stated seeing the worry in her eyes. “Men will be men.”

“I know; I’m just tired of the two of them constantly arguing.” Dani sighed well aware everyone knew what the fight was regarding. “I wish I could go back to that stupid party and take back what I told Tyler because then he’d never have been able to blab, and they’d never have started this argument.”

“Your brother-in-law was the one who let it slip about the miscarriage?” Arielle asked.

“He was standing up for me and Luke, little did we know that the stupid comments he was defending Luke against would soon become his own.”

“He thinks Luke’s been abusing you?” Arielle inquired. “Mrs. Nolan, if there’s any truth to the stories you can tell us; we’ll make sure you get help.”

“Luke has never hurt me. Do we argue? Yes, but every couple does. He hasn’t abused me or hit me the way the reporters are claiming.”

“There are other ways to abuse a person—emotional, psychological…”

“That’s not Luke; trust me I would never have married him or stayed married to him for three years if I were scared that he’d hurt me. It’s my fault he’s even here right now; if I hadn’t yelled at them to stop, he wouldn’t have missed the punch Tyler sent his way.”

“Okay, let’s get you back to Mr. Nolan then,” Arielle said with a soft smile.

Dani nodded following her back through the maze of hallways until they reached the exam room. The doctor came out and gave her a reassuring smile before letting her in to see Luke.

“Dani…”

“Hi,” she said softly heading over to his side. She leaned over and dropped a kiss on his lips, letting his hand slide around her waist and stay there as she turned back to the doctor. “Is he okay?”

“CT was clear; we patched up the gash and are going to keep him here for a bit for observation. We’ll move you to a private room in a couple minutes. I’ll let you have a few moments.”

Dani gave them a smile as he walked out, closing the door behind him. She turned back to Luke and saw the regret in his eyes as she sat down on the side of the bed. “Luke…”

“Dani, I’m sorry baby.”

“You’ve said that about six times now,” she teased trying to lighten the mood.

“I should say it a hundred,” he told her rubbing her cheek lightly. “I overreacted and I scared you.”

“A bit but I know you’d never hit me; that’s not you Luke. Can you please listen to me though?” she asked as he raised the head of the bed up more.

“I’m your captive audience; it’s not like I can storm out after all,” he stated indicating the hospital gown he wore.

“Looks better on you than it did on me.”

“I never want to see you in one of these again,” he said twining his fingers through hers. “Well not unless it’s for a good reason.”

“Luke,” she said hiding her eyes. She didn’t want him to see the hope that filled her at the idea of them having a baby one day.

“Sorry, I should let you talk,” he said reluctantly seeing her hide from that possibility.

“Alright, yes, I went to talk to a…” She began but stopped when a knock sounded on the door and the doctor came back in.

“All set; let’s get you upstairs so we can hopefully get you home later.”

Dani sighed knowing they’d have to postpone the conversation again. By the time they’d gotten him settled in, his parents and siblings had arrived, and she quickly ducked into his room to avoid their questions. She smiled at the nurse as she left telling them to call if they needed anything.

“Alone at last,” Luke joked as Dani crossed over to him. He moved over giving her room to sit beside him. “Dani, if you want out…”

“I don’t. Yes, before my birthday, I went to see an attorney because I was miserable. I knew the prenup was airtight and at that time, I was scared to move the money. I didn’t want to have to run from both you and them.”

“Baby, I’m sorry.”
