Seven years ago:

Cora’s lipscurl into a huge grin as I slowly chew on the first bite. Her brows arch.

“It’s super good, right?”

I nod, smiling a little nervously around the—admittedly—superdelicious bite of brownie in my mouth. It’s melt-in-your-mouth good—pure chocolatey heaven.

Which is why I’m nervous. Why I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. Because Cora Laurent has never once done or said a nice thing for or to me, ever, and is the single most least-likely person I know to be sharing un-freaking-believably good brownies with me.

The first bite I’ve chewed daintily, half expecting a tack to be hidden in the chewy chocolaty goodness. I even sniffed it first, to see if itwaseven chocolate and not, well, shit.

But, so far, it’s nothing but euphoric tastiness.

Cora and Padma glance at each other and then back at me as I swallow the first bite.

“Good, yeah?” Padma, who is right up there with Cora on the least likely to be doing nice things for me spectrum, grins.

“Yeah, wow, delicious,” I smile, handing the brownie back.

Cora laughs.

“Oh, no, that’s all for you. You should just finish it.”

My brows knit.

“Do you not want any?”

“Oh, we already ate ours,” she shrugs casually. “And we had this third one, and I knew you were home, so… yeah.”

My lip twists in my teeth.

“What?”

“Nothing,” I say quickly. “I’m just…” I frown. “What’s the catch?”

Her face goes pink with indignation.

“Oh my God, are you serious right now? I do something nice for you, and you assume I’m trying to be a bitch or something?”

Probably because you arealwaysa bitch to me?

She huffs.

“Fine, see if I make an effort again. I just thought, since our parents are getting married…” she shrugs. “You know?”

I wince as she and Padma start to turn away, looking miffed.

“Cora, I’m sorry,” I blurt.

She pauses, the two of them glancing at each other before turning back to me.

“Sorry,” I smile. “You’re right. I guess we could both make a better effort, right?”

“Totally,” she grins.

“And this is so good,” I laugh, tension melting out of me as I take another big bite of the brownie.
