“And the lord of the keep let you out freely?”

I smirk. “I may have mentioned your preferences to smooth the deal.”

He chuckles. “I’ll try and keep my hands off of you.”

He sighs, taking another sip of scotch as he eyes me, smiling.

“You know, Ella, you and I were destined to be here.”

I smile. “What, working together, or having a drink on your amazing roof garden?”

“Both?” he shrugs.

His lips twist into a wry smile

“We’re a lot alike, you know.”

My lips pull into a grin.

“How so?”

“We’re both driven. We both see where we want to go—where we deserve to be—and we fight like hell to make it happen. We don’t let the ones who marginalized us or kept us in their shadows keep us from what is ours.”

I arch a brow.

“You mean your father.”

“And Noel.”

I smile, shrugging.

“Noel is… complicated. And he and I are even more complicated.”

Jacob nods.

“As are me and my father, I suppose. But Ella, we’re cut from the same cloth. We… feel the world the same way. We tuck our heads into the wind the same way.”

My brow furrows.

“How do you mean?”

He smiles quietly at me. Slowly he extends a hand to the little tea light flickering in its crystal holder on the table between us. He drags the votive towards himself as I frown.

“What are you—”

His hand suddenly moves over the candle, lowering to an inch above the flame as my eyes bulge. My pulse throbs, and I swear, even though it’s been weeks since I was even tempted to do this, I canfeelthe lick of heat against my own skin.

But then suddenly, another realization hits me.

How does he know about that?

My eyes snap up to his, my face paling.

“How—”

“Julianna and Bastian’s party,” he says quietly.

His face tenses, jaw grinding as his hand stays where it is, shaking slightly, until suddenly, he winces, pulling it back.
