“You don’t seriously think you’ll get away withburningme to death, do you?” I spit at him.

I scream, jolting as he slams the hilt of his cane across his own face, hard. He chokes, spitting blood from a split lip. I watch in horror as he reaches into his pocket and pulls out a paring knife. His eyes raise to mine, and I blanch.

“No—!”

He grunts, choking as the blade slashes at his side.

“Fuck,” he winces, tossing the blade aside. “Jesus fuck, that hurts.”

I stare at him.

“Jacob—”

“We had drinks. You revealed yourself as the criminal everyone already thinks you are.”

He smiles, shrugging casually as if he’s discussing dinner plans.

“I tried to stop you, but… you hit me, stabbed me.”

He smirks.

“Apparently you’re a creature of habit, Ella.”.

“You’re insane,” I whisper hoarsely.

“I’m a billionaire with a spotless reputation. You’re the girl who went to reform school for drugs and stabbing your stepfather,” he rasps. “The girl who then fuckingmarried him! The girl who’s already been publicly accused of burning her mother to death.”

He smiles as my heart rips in two.

“This is not going to be a hard sell, believe me.”

He sighs as the tears begin to fall down my face.

“I wish we could have stayed friends, Ella. I thought we would.”

Jacob shrugs, sighing heavily.

“I wonder if you scream the same way your mother did?”

My eyes go wide as he turns, raises the cane, twirls it in his fingers, and then deftly uses it to knock the candle over into the fuel dripping off the table.

The whole thing goes up in a roaring, choking plume of searing heat, like a dragon unleashing its hell across the world.

And all I know is terror.
