My hand drops to rest on her knee through the bedsheets. She tenses, but then her muscles uncoil. She doesn’t shove my hand away.

“What happened, Ella.”

She looks away again.

“Nothing.”

“Oh, I know you’re a much better liar than that.”

Her gaze snaps back to mine, narrowing before the fight goes out of her.

“Just… pressure. All of it. I had a meeting with my lawyer that wasn’t as optimistic—”

“I’m failing to understand why you won’t just utilize Lewis and his team. Surely, even your own pride and stubbornness can see it’s worth staying out of prison to be swallowed for one goddamn second.”

Ella’s lips purse.

“I’m just not, okay? I’m not going to owe—”

“You don’t owe me a thing,” I grunt.

Her gaze drops to her twisting hands again.

“I’m fine.”

I sigh heavily.

“What else happened?”

Her head shakes.

“Nothing. The meeting was hard, and I haven’t really been sleeping. And then the news…”

She flinches, shuddering. My lips curl into a snarl, the rage surging inside of me.

“Lewis is looking into ways of shutting that garbage down on those stations.”

She frowns. “It’s already out there. It’ll be out there forever.”

I hate the acceptance I see on her face. Like that fight she always has in her eyes is giving up.

“What else?”

She shrugs. “That was it.”

Bullshit.

“What happened in the alley, Ella?” I growl quietly.

She swallows thickly. Christ, she’d be a terrible poker player.

“Nothing.”

Stubborn little brat.

I don’t plan on dropping this. But for now, I switch tracks.

“Are you hungry?”
