“My presentation for tomorrow.”

His brows knit as he sits on the edge of the bed beside me.

“May I?”

“Sure?”

I turn the laptop to him, suddenly filling with second thoughts about letting a man who’s basically a demigod of finance and business look at my business pitch. I swallow thickly, my eyes trying desperately to read his as he scans the slides.

Until finally, he frowns, sitting back. My breath holds, waiting for the critique. Not because he’s trying to be cruel, but because I doubt he’d be able tonotcritique it, just out of habit.

“This is very good.”

I blink.

“Wait, what?”

He nods slowly, brow furrowed.

“I mean… it’sverygood.”

“Well don’t sound too surprised.”

He smirks.

“I’m not too surprised,” he grins. “I’m just impressed.”

My heart soars.

“Thanks,” I mumble.

“You’ll do well with this. They’d be foolish not to jump on this.”

I shrug. “I mean, I think I basically have the job anyway.”

“Can’t hurt to walk out with the jobandtheir respect, though.”

I smile. “That’s what I was thinking, too.”

“Oh, Liam is going with you tomorrow, by the way.”

He rises from the bed and turns towards his dressing room.

“Uh, no?” I scowl. “No, he’s not.”

Noel stiffens, turning to narrow his gaze at me.

“This isn’t a negot—”

“He’s not, Noel,” I grit out. “I amnotwalking in there with your familiar hanging over my shoulder.”

He rolls his eyes.

“That’s a bit dramatic, isn’t it?”

“No, it’s not,” I snap. “Noel, I need to walk in there withjustme. I need to prove what I can do, without the reminder of who’s ‘backing’ me, so to speak.”

His brows knit.
