He starts to stand.

“Stop, sit,” I grunt. “It’s not a business thing. And I wouldn’t ask if I didn’t have serious concerns.”

He scowls as he sits, glaring at me.

“About?”

“Not for myself. For her.”

Kristoff doesn’t live under a rock. He’s completely aware of who I’m talking about, and what’s been going on between Ella and I.

“Thomas’s daughter,” he grunts, eyes narrowing. “Thomas’s daughter who you’ve married and by all accounts are having a physical relationship with. Is that the ‘her’ you’re talking about?”

My jaw steels.

“And if it is?”

“Then I have some choice words to call—”

“Don’t,” I snarl. “This is nothing that was even a thought in my head until recently. And if you think otherwise of me, you never knew me at all.”

His lips thin, but he nods.

“I know,” he mutters, begrudgingly. “But fuck, Noel. What’s the angle here?”

I pause.

Therewasan angle. There was an objective, to which she was a tool to use towards achieving.

Those objectives have changed.

“The only angle I have now where it comes to Ella is keeping her safe,” I say quietly. “As Thomas always wanted me to do.”

“I have doubts his wishes included sleeping in the same bed,” he grunts.

“She’s a grown woman, Kristoff. She’s fully capable of making her own—”

“Isshe? With you, I mean?” His eyes narrow. “The power differential is bit stark, Ransom.”

My jaw ticks.

“Believe me, I’m aware of the disparity. I’m aware of the optics, and I’m aware that our friend Thomas would punch me in the throat if he were still alive. But it is what it is, Kristoff,” I hiss. “And I will not apologize for it.”

“Well the world would stop turning if Noel Ransom ever apologized for anything, so, that’s fair.”

I sigh heavily. He glares back at me.

“What’s the fucking deal with Prince.”

“I have major concerns about him in regards to Ella’s safety.”

His brows knit.

“And I also have concerns about his involvement in Matilde and Cassandra’s deaths.”

There’s the bandaid ripping off.

Kristoff’s face darkens, his blue eyes stabbing into me as he leans back in his chair.
