Did that mean he was still on her team, even if working remotely? She liked the sound of that.

As she approached the Humvee, a small furry face plastered itself to the inside of the window.

“A dog?” She stumbled to a halt. She’d never liked dogs, not since being scared by a terribly loud Chow Chow as a child. Dogs were unpredictable, noisy, dirty, and danger—

“Oh what a cutie!” Andi stepped up and tapped its nose through the glass of the driver’s window. It wore pink bows and a narrow leather collar bearing tiny rhinestones.

“Cute?” Miranda couldn’t catch her breath. She could hear a faint bark despite the protection of the armored glass.

Andi wiggled her finger close by the glass. “My mother keeps Shih Tzus.”

“Don’t ever ask me to meet your mother then.”

Andi spun to look at her.

It was her sad face. Miranda was fairly sure of that, though she had no idea why.

“Okay, I won’t,” Andi’s whisper was softer than the next muffled yip of the dog inside the vehicle.

“Good.”

Now she was sure that was Andi’sverysad face. Miranda still didn’t understand why.
