He thinks on it for heartbeat, then shakes his head. “Not really.”

That’s another thing….why stay somewhere if you don’t like what you’re doing? Clearly this man seated next to me isn’t happy; it’s written all over every tense line on his face. And whether that’s because of his job or the wife he mentions without any emotion, I feel bad for him. Life is too goddamn short to do things that make you unhappy.

“Gee…that’s too bad.”

“Yeah.”

Christ….he’s like a rock; solid, grounded, unmoving. Nothing I seem to say manages to get more than a speck of emotion from him. It’s like he’s accepted the sorrowful state of his life and never expects it to change.

How very, very sad.

Gunner saves me from anymore awkward conversation, strolling up to us and looking at Davis intently from head to toe. There’s nothing shy in his assessment, even as his gaze lingers on the bulge in Davis’s jeans or the pink wetness of his lips. My slightly flamboyant and dear friend smiles wide, showing off his adorable grin as he sends me a wink of approval, then turns his attention back the man seated next to me. “Well, hello there. I’m Gunner. I’m a Leo. I’m single, and I’d love to take you out dancing.”

Shock reins over me as Davis chuckles and shakes his head; a far different reaction than the one he had with Chloe. Makes me wonder why. Makes me also wonder why it matters. “I’m Davis. I’m a Gemini. Dancing sounds like a form of torture, sorry to say. Thank you for the offer, but I’m married.”

“Damn.” Gunner offers a slight pout. “All the gorgeous ones are always taken.” His eyes drift to me. “Well, not all of them.” He gives me a hip bump, then turns back to interrogate Davis. “How come I’ve never met you before?”

“Just lucky, I guess.”

Gunner and I began to laugh and Davis just sits there, relaxed for the first time since he walked through the door. Leave it to Gunner’s outrageous behavior to erase all the pent up uneasiness between us.

“Ooh…you’re a cagey one. You sure you won’t reconsider the dancing? I promise not to grind on you.” He leans in close and winks. “Well, not too much.”

Davis’s cheeks flame as he looks down and shakes his head. My buddy has stunned him silent, but he’s not running away, so that’s progress at least. Regardless, I feel like I need to save him. “Gun, why don’t you trot over there and hassle Jack for a change?” I’m well aware of the hostile, sexual energy between my two friends, and even though Jack swears up and down that he’s hetero, I’ve seen the way he looks at Gunner.

Gunner huffs and rolls his eyes, a drama queen to the core. “He’s being an ass.”

Those two have ridden this merry-go-round for years now, so I’m not surprised that they’re once again not speaking to one another. “Well, go keep Rolene company then. She looks lonely.”

He gives me a silent look that says exactly what he thinks of me at this moment, then politely murmurs, “Davis, it was lovely to make your acquaintance. If you ever feel like dancing, just give me a call.” With a shake of his ass, he skips across the room and flops down onto the couch, sighing loudly.

Dragging my fingers through my hair, I give Davis the side-eye. “Yeah, my friends aren’t exactly subtle.”

Warm brown eyes meet mine. “No worries. I’m flattered.” His nose wrinkles up as confusion washes over his face. “I think I am, anyway.”

I watch him as he turns his attention back to the game. That feeling of excitement that’s been fluttering around in my stomach, instantly changes to a thud of nervousness. This distant, untouchable man is going to be the death of me. Of that, I have no doubt.
