He turns his face quickly, pressing a soft kiss against my palm and smiles up at me.

“To inspiration,” Jamie calls out, lifting his glass while others follow suit, and I gaze into my favourite sea of blue.

Ikickoffmyheels as soon as we’re in the elevator, grinning as Ben’s fingers roam over my hips when he pulls me against him, my back against his chest, and his face nuzzles into my neck.

“So, how does it feel to be an author?” His breath fans over my skin as he speaks and I hold onto his arms as I close my eyes.

“Honestly?”

I feel his laugh.

“Yes, Mik. Honestly.”

“I’m exhausted and nauseous.”

“Of course you are.” He sighs as the doors slip open and he reaches down to scoop up my shoes. “Because you overthink everything, Mik.”

I laugh as he pulls me through the hallway and down to our apartment, and shuffle impatiently while he unlocks the door. “Ben?”

“Yes, Mik?”

“I’m hungry.”

Ben groans as he hangs up his jacket and turns to face me. “Mik, we literally just spent the night at a beautiful restaurant with fancy food and wine.”

As he speaks I slip my hands up his chest, staring up at him with doe eyes, and Ben’s words slow.

“And you are nervous, so you hardly touched your food, and now I’m going to have to make you grilled cheese at one in the morning, aren’t I?”

I push up on my tip-toes as his arms wrap around my waist and he leans into my kiss with a gentle eye roll.

He kisses me slowly, with his hands pressed against my ass and a resigned smile against his lips. This is my favourite kind of kiss - the lazy kind that takes its time to spread a warm, buzzing electricity through my veins - and I sigh as he pulls away.

“You know, I don’t think you realise that you’re pretty perfect, Benjamin Haston.”

“Oh, I know I’m perfect, Mikaela.” He smirks before kissing me again and pushing me towards the couch. “Now sit that pretty butt down and let me make you a sandwich, Little Miss Author.”

I flop onto the couch as instructed and tug the blanket from where it’s thrown over the side. In this moment, with Ben in the kitchen and my face buried in our couch cushions, I finally let myself breathe.
