Manically.

Actually…

Is he giggling?

“Emery, it’s Graham and Briggs. Can you please put down the weapon? Jesus.”

Seconds later, the foyer light flicks on, illuminating the culprits.

Graham Adams and Briggs Wilson.

My brother’s idiot best friends and teammates on his hockey team, the Avalanches.

“Are you serious?” I mutter, lowering the stick but only slightly. “It’s almost midnight. Why in the hell are you two stumbling into my brother’s house? I thought you were thieves!”

Graham smiles, revealing two dimples on his cheeks. “Well, we had a little bit too much to drink and Reed told us to crash here. Should’ve warned ya. Sorry babe.”

Too good looking for his own good, Briggs snickers next to him, “Sup Em.”

His eyes travel down the length of my body and in the… commotion, I forgot to pull on a sweatshirt. I’m clad in only one of Reed’s old t-shirts that falls barely mid-thigh.

I bring the stick down and lean it back against the front door in its rightful place, then cross my arms. “I should make you both sleep outside after scaring me like that.”

Briggs apologizes, but Graham stumbles slightly toward the kitchen. “I’m fucking starving. I know Reed’s got the hookup on food, so I’m gonna eat real quick before we crash.”

Briggs nods. “Fuck yes, let’s go.”

My feet stay rooted in place, and I just shake my head. I love my brother, dearly. I do.

But he and his friends aren’t the smartest bunch.

“Clean up whatever you take out,” I call behind them.

“You got it, babe!”

Babe.

Annoying.

I pad back to the couch, and press play on Law and Order before taking my spot again. Thirty minutes pass, and I can’t focus with how loud Dumb and Dumber are being in there, so I press pause once more and walk toward the kitchen.

Before I walk in, I overhear Graham and Briggs talking. I press myself against the wall of the hallway and peer around the doorframe.

“Dude, Emery is hot as fuck. I just need one night with her,” Briggs says, biting his fist.

Graham shakes his head, a shudder racking his wide shoulders, then pauses. A second passes before he speaks, “Gross. That would be like fucking Reed, and while the dude is extraordinarily handsome… fuck no.”

Briggs laughs, tossing another chip in his mouth. “You’re telling me you wouldn’t give her the D?”

“Absolutely fucking not. Look, even if she wasn’t Reed’s sister, I still wouldn’t be interested. She’s not my type and I’m pretty sure she wouldn’t be yours either.”

“Yeah? Why not?”

Shrugging, Graham takes a bite out of the leftover pizza that was in the fridge. “She’s too sassy. She’s on the “I’m too independent for anyone, men suck, yada- yada. I like my women a little more… agreeable. Plus, she’s not that hot.”

Fucking asshole. Egotistical dick licker.

I own that shit. I am who I am, and I’m not changing for anyone, and especially not a man. I’m confident and independent, and I don’t rely on a man to prove it. I’m way too hot to be listening to this crap spewing from Graham Adam’s mouth.
