He’s crazy. It’s official, without a doubt.
“Graham, that’snota reason to get married. Because your mama will kill you, and because your family is old-fashioned. We’re not in nineteen eighteen anymore.”
“You don’t understand. Everything I’ve done in my life; I’ve done for her. Hell, it’s the reason I even play professional hockey. I’m here because she made me follow my dreams, and I can’t stand to let her down.”
My headache is intensifying with each passing second, and it’s probably because I’ve only had that slice of greasy pizza today.
“Can we talk about this later?” I ask, rubbing my temples. I’m overwhelmed right now, even more now than earlier.
He looks like he might say something again, opening then closing his mouth, but then nods. “I know you’re overwhelmed, but you’re not alone, Em.”
“Thank you. I have my first appointment, uh, Monday. If you want to come.”
Graham’s face lights up, and I see exactly what Holland meant. Grahamisgoing to be a great dad, despite his man-whore tendencies, he’s kind, and caring, and…good. I’ve seen it with Evan and Olive. I’ve seen the loyalty he’s shown his teammates and his friends. He’s been attentive to me and nice, when I truly didn’t give him a reason to be. I’m a big enough person to admit that while I would never date him, he’s actually an okay guy.
And the only way I’m going to survive this with my heart in one piece is to make sure it stays in the gilded cage I've built and keep him out. At all costs.
“Of course I wanna be there, Em. I wouldn’t miss it for anything. Just text me the time, and where to meet you and I’ll be there.”
“Okay, glad we got this out of the way. I also have a huge case at work that I’ve been handed, and I have a lot of pressure on my shoulders, so my schedule will probably be really busy, and-”
“Davidson,” he says, interrupting me.
I didn’t even realize I was rambling until he stopped me. I’ve been doing that a lot lately.
“Look, I like you. I like being around you, and I like the fact that you're having my baby. It’s not just because my mom will kill me or that I don’t want to disappoint her. The ball is in your court, just know that I’ll be here regardless.”
