“University?” I ask.

“I don’t have the money for that.”

Nodding in understanding, I let him go. “Funny you should say that, you’ve just been awarded a scholarship.”

“Wait. What?” His eyebrows furrow in confusion.

“When you’re done with university, if you choose to pursue financing or any sort of math, you’ll have a guaranteed position with Dalton Enterprises, if you’d like it. Your scholarship will cover room and board, food, and anything else you’ll need. I’ll have everything arranged.”

His eyes harden. “And what do I owe for this kindness?”

“Silence,” I say again. “Don’t tell anyone we were here. Give it a week, and call me to set it all up.” I smile gently. “You asked how I got here? I had help, a few people who believed in me, and then I went hard. If you’re willing to go against society and work hard, you’ll go far, Joseph.”

“That’s it?” he asks. “You want nothing else from me?”

“Nothing else.”

Joseph looks down at the money in his hands and back up to me. “Deal.” He bows his head slightly. “I never saw the five of you here.”

He turns to leave, but I call him one more time. “Oh, and, Joseph?” When he looks back at me, I say, “Tell Mrs. Julia thank you for me, would you?”

Joseph nods and leaves, closing the door behind him.

“That was mighty nice of you,” Booker comments, his brow raised. “A scholarship and a job. You just single-handedly brought that boy off the streets.”

I shrug. “What’s the point of having money if you don’t do something good with it?” Picking up the food on the tray, I smile gratefully that there is fruit included. I’m starving. “Now we need to figure out the perfect way to reveal my return from the dead.”

“I have an answer for that,” Gage inserts. He turns his phone towards us, but I can’t make out the words from so far away. “Apparently, there’s a charity gala tomorrow night in your honour.”

Grinning, I take a bite of a strawberry. “How convenient. Looks like you’re going to need some more tuxedos, boys.”
