Archer’s eyes lock on me, and I shrug. “I don’t like it, but I see no other way. We can’t kill her.” Eric and Booker sit up, so I roll my eyes. “And we can’t keep her here forever. What other choice do we have? Trust me, I like the idea less than you, trusting an outsider, an unstable asset, but we have no choice.”

“You’re right.” Archer sighs, rubbing his eyes. That’s when I notice the circles under them. He’s as stressed as the rest of us, but he won’t ever admit it. “I hated this anyway. I just hope that when we let her go, it doesn’t ruin us.”

“It’s something we have to risk,” Eric offers, his voice stronger now. “Chaz is the bad guy, Archer. Don’t make us into the enemy instead. I never cared what lines we crossed, but I won’t cross this one anymore. Not even to protect my family. She’s innocent. She doesn’t deserve this.”

“So it’s decided,” Archer murmurs, looking around at us. “We set her free…and deal with whatever happens.”

“It’s been a good ride, boys.” I toast them. “Eric, don’t drop the soap in prison.”

That makes them all laugh as Eric nudges me. “Nah, you’d be my bitch, big guy.”

“Like fuck I would,” I mutter as even Archer laughs. I search their faces, committing them to memory in case everything goes wrong and it’s the last time I see them.

In case I lose my family.

In case she destroys us with the power she doesn’t even know she has.
