How could she?

How could she lie to us? Use us? Look into our faces and make love to me when she was…was doing…doing this?

I almost crack the phone from my grip as I stand there in the dark. My heart, my already scarred, blackened organ was hers before either of us knew it. It’s been used, dropped, thrown away, and discarded more times than I can count. Yet I put it back together and gave it to her, hoping she would be different. I gave up women, cars, riches, and drugs to become the man she deserved.

And all this time it was a lie.

We are nothing but a paycheck to her.

We aren’t hers, and she isn’t ours.

We’re a fucking job.

Mischief whines as he lifts his head like he senses my pain, but I turn away before I do something stupid, before I wake her and demand answers. Instead, I quietly leave the apartment and head upstairs. I lose track of time as I try to hold it together, suddenly finding myself standing in our apartment, where Rogan and Maddox are watching a film with beer and pizza.

They look over, and Rogan smiles as he teases me. “Good night, brother?” he jokes, while Maddox grins slightly.

I don’t reply, I just stare blankly at them as the phone burns in my hand. They lose their smiles, realizing something is wrong, and instantly stand and turn off the TV.

“What’s wrong? Is Rory okay?” Maddox rushes out. His first thought is for her, and I have to swallow the pain it causes in me.

This will destroy them.

She did what thousands of others have tried to do, but she’s the first to succeed.

She broke the Dixen brothers.

She’s more than just a thief of our hearts. She’s a fucking killer. A cold-hearted businesswoman. She’s our enemy, and now I have to tell my brothers.

But as fractured as we are, I’m not sure we can survive this.
