The words are an echo from the night that changed both of our lives forever. He was protecting me then, and he’s protecting me now. There’s nothing else I can do for him, and I won’t deny him this last request. There’s so much more I wish I could say, but the words just lodge in my throat as I turn away from Mitchel and run toward my future, to the Dixen brothers. I rush across the grass, heart shattered, as the sobs finally break free. He’s right—I will always love him, but he’s not my path anymore.

They are.

Maddox, Alistair, and Rogan… They wait for me with open arms, and I do what he asked.

I don’t look back.

Maddox scoops me into his embrace and moves to the car without question, placing me in the middle seat as I shake and cry before slipping in next to me. Rogan slides in on my other side as Alistair drives away.

“My car—” I start.

“We’ll take care of it. You’re in no state to drive, and we aren’t leaving you,” Maddox snaps.

I settle at that, trusting them as always. They take my hands, comforting me, being there for me. No one can fix this wound but me, yet they help.

“At least he’s safe,” I choke out through the tears and broken sobs, my hands held in theirs as we go home—our home, with my new family. Mitch is right—he’s not it anymore. He can’t be when he’s not here and he only hurts me more than helps.

I have to let him go, I have them now.

As we drive away, I face forward, toward my future, and when the gates shut behind me, they shut on my past for good.
