“Elated is a pretty fucking heavy feeling.” He searched her eyes when she finally met his again. “Then you stayed with him all this time and—”

“What I felt for my childhood sweetheart who’d I’d been with for so long after not seeing him in a while . . .” She paused as he continued to stare at her in question but went on. “Wasnothingcompared to what I felt the other day you got here, and I saw you again for the first time in two years. I’d stayed with him all this time because like I said, I was done stringing him along. I knew the next time I broke it off, it’d be for good. I was still nervous I might regret it, but I figured with us being so far apart it wouldn’t be such a big deal to give it some time until I was absolutely sure.”

He took another step toward her. “And what made you absolutely sure?” Hell yeah, he was going to make her say it.

She glanced away, the unease more than obvious, then took a deep breath and turned back to face him. “I’d begun to think maybe I wasn’t capable of that kind of magic. Seeing you again, and hearing your explanation about that night, confirmed what I’d already suspected, that obviously Iamcapable of feeling it, but it was just never gonna happen with Cade.”

Lex took another triumphant step toward her until he was less than an arm’s length from her. “Did you tell him that?” She shook her head and his brows furrowed. “Why?”

“I didn’t have to.” She lifted and dropped a shoulder. “He figured it out, but I did tell him seeing you wasn’twhollythe reason. That it’d been a long time coming. I explained everything I just explained to you, then admitted that seeing you just helped me move forward and do what I’d been putting off for too long out of fear. Wasn’t fair for him to put his life on hold until I grew a pair and finally admitted defeat. That a romantic relationship just wasn't in the cards for him and me anymore.” Lex took another step toward her, and she allowed it, bringing her hand up against his chest. He glanced down at it, then at her lips until his eyes were finally on hers. “Are you still feeling the magic? Because I am.”

“Lex,” she said taking an obvious deep breath. “I only told you all this because I had a feeling, if you hadn’t already figured it out, it’d be just a matter of time before you did. But it doesn’t mean that I’m ready to just jump into something new so quick. You’ve only been here five days. I know we had a nice time at the wed—”

“You called it magical, and I agree that it was.”

She smiled making him smile too. “Okay, it was magical and there’s no denying we’re both still feeling it. But we can’t just jump into something like this without thinking things through. Life’s about to get complicated for both of us. School, soccer, my senior year load of courses, not to mention my internships. We can’t just assume because we’re both feeling this infatuation that it’ll automatically wor—”

“Infatuation?” He took a step back feeling his insides heat and she recoiled her hand instantly “You just admitted you dumped yourlifelongboyfriend for me.”

“Becauseof you.”

“What’s the difference?”

“I should’ve never gotten back together with him in the first place,” she explained, but the conviction she spoke with earlier was gone. “Us breaking up was inevitable. I know that now. The reminder that I am capable of feeling what I’ve been waiting to feel with him, just helped speed things up.”

“You’re really gonna do this?” His eyes searched hers as he did his best to keep his cool. “You’re gonna take back the fact that you just admitted I’m the reason you broke things off with a dude you’ve been with forever, and that like me, you never got over thatonenight we had together where I never even got to kiss you? Why?”

The anger he’d begun to feel disappeared instantly when her beautiful eyes flooded, and her lip quivered as she brought a hand over it. “Because I’m scared, okay?” she squeaked.

Instantly he was near her again and pulled her hand away from her face, lacing his fingers through it. He caressed the side of her face with the back of his other hand and kissed her forehead. “Scared of what, baby?”

“You’re right.” She sniffed, shaking her head adding her signature eyeroll. “We never even shared so much as a kiss, and yet, I’d never been so hurt in my life.”

Lex pulled his hand out of hers and cupped her face gazing into her eyes. “I never hurt you, Princess. You just thought I did.” He pecked her softly and he finally felt what he’d been daydreaming about for too long and it wasamazing. “I’ve told you. I’m sorry things went down the way they did but I’ll never hurt you. I promise. Because you can call it whatever you want, but as crazy as this sounds, this is no infatuation for me.” He leaned in and kissed her softly at first and it wassomuch more than what he’d been dreaming about for over two years now. At nearly twenty-one, Lex might be relatively young, but he’d kissed enough girls to know this was different. He’d felt the typical adrenaline hike, the excitement of knowing where this was likely headed, and the instant blood rush to his cock when these kisses got deep enough before. But he’dneverfelt what he was feeling now. As satisfying as it was to finally get to taste and devour her mouth, everything he was used to feeling when he kissed someone like this was all physical. The only emotion he’d ever felt was the carnal excitement of knowing he’d have the girl under him soon. What he felt now was surreal, yet at the same time he felt something he’d never imagined he might be feeling as he continued to kiss Xochitl deeply. The electrifying elation was laced with dread, and it confused the hell out of him. Despite the utter delight of having his tongue tangle with hers so perfectly in rhythm, his heart thundered with more than just excitement. But he couldn’t stop. The long-awaited kiss went deeper and deeper, until she was nearly moaning, and it drove him fucking nuts.

When he finally pulled away, he gazed into her eyes as he saw the flicker of conviction in them again. “We can’t just go from having one magical night, twoyears ago, to living together, Lex.” And there it was. He knew there’d be push back. Lex gazed in her eyes with anticipation as she licked her lips. “As much as your kisses me feelsperfect, this is insane.”

Lex couldn’t help smiling at how much easier this turned out to be than what he’d expected. Despite his nervous heart, there was no turning back now. “As long as I know you’re feeling for me all that I didn’t even know I was feeling for you until I got here, we can take this as slow as you’re comfortable with.” He leaned in and kissed her softly again before pulling away and looking deep into her eyes. “I agree, this does feel insane. But we’ve got two years to make up for.”

That made Xochitl wince and Lex already knew why. That’s how fast he’d begun to pick up on the different nuances in every one of her beautiful expressions. Before she could even say it, he shook his head. “Don’t think about it as time wasted, babe. Because you were right.” He pulled her to him and embraced her firmly. “Everything does happen for a reason. If you’re questioning how this is going to work with as much as we’re going to have going on now, and we’re living in the same dorm, can you imagine how impossible it would’ve felt to make this work with us two hours away from each other and both having a ton going on?” He tilted his head with a slight frown. “Not that I won’t forever blame the asshole that pissed off my dad that night for being the reason why I had to go two whole years thinking any chance with you was lost for good. He turned out to be the biggest douche by the way, but I’ll have to tell you about that another time. Right now, we have a lot of time to make up for.” Lex took her by the hand, and he heard Xochitl’s breath hitch. Her first thought no doubt was that he was headed to his bedroom. So, he headed to the sofa in the front room instead This had gone far better than he’d expected when he’d first decided to just put it out there. He wouldn’t be stupid enough to blow it by pushing for too much this fast. Plopping down, he lay back onto the sofa and pulled her down over him with a groan. “Jesus, I thought this would never be possible.” Ignoring the foreboding voice in his head urging him to slow this down he devoured her mouth, and it was just like their first kiss ever just moments ago. Heaven. Her not even flinching when the throbbing erection pressing up against his pants, rubbed against her hip, had him smiling against her lips. If that was any indication of just how fast they might move this along to the next level this might be a lot sooner than he’d begun to expect. Lex already knew, that screaming voice of reason in his head would be helpless to stop it no matter how fast that next level came.
