Elise’s face is hard. She hugs herself, taking in my tear-stained cheeks and ratty hair. I’m still in my pyjamas, I realise.

“My parents are here. They’ve seen it.”

My eyes close. I feel my chest contracting, but there’s no air inside my lungs.

“How could you do that to Nick?” She barks at me. “How long has this been going on?”

“A few months.”

When I open my eyes, Elise’s jaw is swinging. “Months?”

“I was going to break it off with Nick … Today, actually …” I drag the back of my hand across my nose. “I can’t believe Harley would do this to me …”

“Well. It’s Harley.”

I scoff. “Yeah? And Brennon is a fucking angel, isn’t he?”

Elise flinches. “Brennon might not be perfect, but he wouldn’t do what Harley did. And I wouldn’t do what you did.” She shakes her head. My heart splinters when I see the look of disgust on her face. “What you have done to Nick is unforgivable.”

There’s a ringing in my ears. Her mouth is moving, but I can no longer hear her. Elise turns and walks away.

Everything is spinning. My head is light.

Little did I know, that was the last time I would see my best friend.

I must have left Harley fourteen voicemails. I drove to his house, but it seemed no one was home, not even his parents. I search everywhere for him. I call over and over, trying to get through. After over twenty missed calls, his phone ends up going to voicemail. He’s either blocked my number, or switched off his phone.

When I get back to the house, my parents, and Sam are sitting at the dining table. There’s a heavy, suffocating silence. The air is thick and when I enter, I see it on their faces.

They know.
