“Look, I know I must seem like an idiot, but you don’t know Harley like I do. No one does.”

He barks out a dry laugh. “You don’t say.”

“I’m so sorry, Nick. I never wanted to hurt you. I lied to myself all this time, trying to convince myself I didn’t want to be with him.”

“Just stop,” he whispers, eyes on the floor. “I don’t want to hear about it.”

“I don’t want you to hate me.”

“I can’t hate you, Josephine. That’s a part of the problem.”

“You should be with Jess,” I say. “She really cares for you.”

“Now it’s okay for me to be with Jess. Right. Because that would make you feel a whole lot less guilty, yeah?”

“Nick,” I sigh and it comes deep from my chest.

The sound of my phone vibrating fills the room. We both stiffen, listening to it.

“That’s him, isn’t it?” Nick turns then, and looks around the room. I follow as his eyes travel over the two coffee cups by my bed, a black t-shirt strewn over a chair, Harley’s shoes kicked off in the corner. “Oh my God,” Nick says. “He’s been staying here. You’re together. Aren’t you?”

I remind myself to inhale and exhale.

“Wow.”

His soft, green eyes are round and sad as he stares at me before walking out. I will never forget the way he just looked.

“I’m sorry,” I whisper, but when I look up, he’s already gone.
