“Is it?” he asks. “It must have been a shock.”

“Harley, we’re not friends. You don’t give a fuck about me, so why are you trying to act like the nice guy?”

He looks taken aback by my words. “You think I’d be here right now if I didn’t give a fuck about you?”

“You never have before, so why would you now?”

“How can you say that?” he growls, looking angry now.

“Because if you ever cared for me, you wouldn’t have done what you did.”

His hands fall to his sides, and we stare at each for a long moment.

“Now, please, let me walk home in peace.” I shoulder around him and march onwards.

I hate that his words are swirling around in my mind. He doesn’t care, and I hate that he is getting under my skin.

“Are you with Nick?”

I throw my hands up in exasperation as I look back. “What?”

“Are you seeing Nick?”

I glower up at Harley, pushing my tongue into my cheek. “Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because he is the one for me, Harley. He always has been.”

He shakes his head, looking furious. “No. He isn’t.”

“You know nothing.”

“I know you weren’t happy, Josie. That’s why we—”

I throw my hands out and shove him. I’ve never been a violent person, but Harley brings out the worst in me.

“You have no right to talk to me. Aboutanything.” I feel tired and unsettled. I don’t want to have this conversation now. Or ever. “Leave me alone, Harley. I mean it.”

“No, you don’t.”

Ignoring him, I turn and stride away.

This time, he lets me go.
