“And Jack? What am I going to do with him?”

“I’m sure Rosa would keep him for the night.”

“I don’t know.” At some point, her teasing turned to skepticism.

“How about we make this interesting?”

“I’m listening.”

“A wager.”

He had her attention. She loved a good old competition.

“We go for a run in the morning. Whomever completes a two-mile run first can decide when and whereand ifwe go to dinner tomorrow night. Deal?”

She grinned, thinking how they had run together previously during Brock and Todd’s wedding weekend. She’d been so enamored by him her start had been shaky. But didn’t he remember she’d easily kept the pace?

“Make it three miles.”

“Three it is.”

Sucker.Ava was used to running three miles every day before she’d left the army. She’d think about the where, when, and if later because right now, she needed him to use his mouth for other things besides talking.

It always seemed no matter when they found intimate time alone together, they’d get interrupted. So, she cooled her libido when his phone rang. He pulled it from his pocket as she braced to hear what the excuse was this time.

“Sorry. I need to take this.”

“Okay.” She guessed he’d be a few minutes tops.

After a peck on her lips, he apologized again. “I’ll see you in the morning.”

“Oh, okay.” She watched him go as she sank onto her mattress, surprised, but letting the day’s exhaustion seep in. Images of her likeness in the video game came back to her, and she marveled again at the idea of being a muse. She’d always be a part of his life now, immortalized in his work.
