She huffed back into her seat, apparently relieved that whoever she was ordering about had everything under control. I was fine with whatever was happening behind the scenes until I spied Gabriel’s odd expression. When I caught him looking at me, he frowned and turned his head.

What the fuck was going on?

I tugged the sleeve of my coat into place, looking down as I did so. “Tell me, Lilly. Who is the ‘she’ you keep calling?”

Lilly looked up, confused for a moment, then she burst into a huge smile. Bigger even than the one she gave me when I came home.

“Oh, my God, Dante. I’ve been so busy I didn’t get a chance to tell you. And you’ve been gone, but she didn’t tell me until last week, and well, you never answer your phone – ”

“Lilly...” I warned.

“It’s Noemi!” she cried out as if she couldn’t hold the words back any longer. “Noemi’s home from England!”

She sat back and smiled, deliriously happy that her best friend had come home after a five-year absence.

I ignored Gabriel’s look because if I met his gaze again, I might have done something I regretted. I turned to look out the window. The car was moving at a decent speed again now that we had passed the accident that had held us up.

My mother was right. Things do change. With four words, my expectations for the evening plummeted. The urge to open the door and roll my body out into traffic was very real. I knew how to do it right. I’d done it before and survived.

I thought I was done with that girl. I told her to go away and she had.

The rage that filled me at her return reminded me again that I was very much a man. An ego-maniacal, selfish,lust-filledman. I made a sacrifice once, to try to be a better man, and now, she was back to throw it in my face. It was a choice she was going to regret.
