I let go of her hair, causing her to fall back against the pillows. “You and Lilly have talked about me?”

“She’s been my best friend since the sixth grade. Of course, we’ve talked about you.”

“Aboutustogether?” I barked.

She nodded into darkness.

“Words!” I snapped.

“Yes!” she snapped back. “But it’s no big deal. We talk... about everything.”

I was still angry. I got it. They were friends. I don’t know what the fuck girls talk about, but it still pissed me off. And what the fuck did Lilly know about my sex life? What kind of lies or gibberish did she make up that had scared Noemi?

I sat on the edge of the bed, turned away from her.

“What exactly did she tell you?”

“Nothing specific. Just that Gabriel said...”

My head snapped around. “Gabriel? What the fuck did Gabriel say?”

Did they sit around the table, having coffee and chatting about what did or did not get me off?

“Nothing!” she cried out. “Dante, you’re misreading this whole thing. It’s just that Lilly was warning... er... telling me to be careful... about you... and she said Gabriel just said that you were different... that you didn’t like girls like me. That’s all.”

“That’s all,” I muttered, standing up. I picked up my suit jacket and coat then grabbed my shoes from the floor.

“Are you leaving?”

Fuck, yes, I was leaving. Getting as far away from her as the plane floor plan would allow.

“Dante, don’t go.”

I stopped in the doorway at her desperate plea, but I didn’t turn around. I told her never to lie to me and she hadn’t. She had no idea that being the object of gossip, particularly amongst my own family, was one of the reasons why I lived such a secluded life. They didn’t understand me. They told her things that tainted how she saw me. I shouldn’t have given a fuck, but I did. I had opened up enough to let something so insignificant get to me. It was a mistake I wouldn’t make again.

“Go to sleep, Noemi.” The cold returned to my voice. “We’ll be arriving in a few hours.”

I thought I heard a sniff as I walked away. My mask returned quickly, and the sound had no impact on me. I turned down the bed in the neighboring cabin. This fucking mess was why I didn’t do things like this. Taking her awa3y, getting close to her, it was all a big fucking mistake.
