I allowed myself a moment of weakness, a moment to bask in what I’d discovered. The temptation was real. I couldn’t live with her hating me. If I couldn’t find a way to get us through this, it wouldn’t matter that she loved me.

When this was over, I would take over hell to get her back. I’d be whatever kind of man she wanted me to be. Until then, she had to stay the fuck away from me.

She said she knew me. Knew who I was and what she meant to me. If that were the case, would she wait for me? It would be easier if she did, but in the end, it wouldn’t matter. I’d steal her. Kill whoever I had to. Rip her away from whatever happiness she’d found just so I could keep her. Until then, she had to stay away.

I steeled myself. Channeled the baser instincts that made me the killer I was.

“It was fun, Noemi. We had a good time. And who knows, in another time, another place...”

I traced the edge of her cheek with my thumb and she closed her eyes at my touch.

“But it’s over. You made me an offer and I accepted. I took your virginity. I took you. But you’re not a virgin anymore and the allure... well, it’s just not there anymore either, you understand. I got what I wanted. Now, it’s time to move on.”

She looked at me through narrowed eyes. “I don’t believe you.”

My hand dropped to my side and I shrugged. “I don’t care.”

I steeled myself against the look in her eyes as the tears poured unhindered down her cheeks.

Her shoulders fell in defeat, but the feeling that I’d won, that I had gotten what I wanted, left a bitter, flat taste in my mouth.

I turned my back dismissively and walked around my desk, a move meant as much to block her out as it was to give me a few seconds to bolster my resolve. With my peripheral vision, I saw her walk to the door and pull it open.

I prepared myself for her exit, for the best thing that ever happened in my life to walk away and leave me.

I kept my eyes down until the sharp snap of the door and a hurried movement caught me by surprise. I tensed, not prepared for the fiery woman that stood in front of me.

I glanced up at her, feigning disinterest with one finger tapping on the desktop. Noemi was small but regal in her stance.

My fucking queen.

The trail of tears through her makeup marred her otherwise flawless beauty. The smudged mascara. Red, swollen, fuck-me lips.

Fuuuck.

Her siren’s song called out to me like a meal to a starving man. I could have devoured her on the spot and not given a damn about consequences. If only I could have given myself that luxury.

The man I once was would have done it, would have taken what he wanted and not cared about another soul. But the man I’d become, he would die before he let anything happen to her. He was the one calling the shots tonight.

And she knew it.

With her next words, Noemi shattered my icy composure.

“I. See. You.”

One pink-tipped finger waved shakily in my direction. She had regrouped. Her back straightened and her eyes turned to steel.

“You don’t fool me. I see you,” she repeated. “And you’re scared.”

She turned, closing the door behind her with a deceptive softness.

I white-knuckled the edge of my desk. I let out every raw, burning emotion I had with a roar that could be heard through the soundproof walls. With a strength I didn’t know I possessed, I gripped the edge of the mahogany executive desk and flipped it over, sending papers, pens, and the Madonna flying into the air. Mary crashed near my feet and shattered into tiny unrecognizable pieces.

Just like what was left of me.
