“To ask him. I’m going to New York.”

She headed for the door and I jumped ahead of her to block her.

“No, you aren’t.”

“Don’t tell me what to do.”

“I’m not trying to tell you what to do. But I do need to point out that you can’t drive to New York right now. You don’t have a car. You can be angry about this all you want, and I don’t care, but you’ve had a shock tonight, Noemi. You’re in no condition to be driving, baby girl.”

I don’t know if it was my nickname for her or the realization that she had no way of getting to New York, but her shoulders slumped in defeat and she dropped her purse.

“You’re right. I forgot.” With the shock of what she’d learned, her voice became stiff and wooden.

I tugged her back to the living room. “Sit.” I nudged her gently onto the sofa then went back to the bar. I didn’t know if it was what she’d want, but a shot of scotch wouldn’t hurt, and I definitely needed one.

I returned to the sofa with a shot glass in each hand.

She raised her eyebrows as I handed her a glass. “Shoot it or sip it, I don’t care, but drink it. It will help.”

I tossed mine back, and to my surprise, Noemi did the same, coughing and making a face as the liquid burned down her throat. She fell back against the pillows with her hands covering her eyes.

“I need to talk to Willis,” she insisted.

“And you will. I’ll take you there.”

She brightened up with anticipation.

“Tomorrow.”

She slumped down again.

“Listen to me, Noemi. We need to make sure he’s even in New York before we go driving out there in the middle of the night. It’s possible he’s in D.C.”

“It’s not that much further.”

“True, but I think you need to rest, adjust, and think through this before we go chasing your brother down.”

“It’s so much,” she started. “I can’t believe it, but I do. I know you wouldn’t make all of this up, but also...”

She tilted her head the way she always did right before she disagreed with me.

“I also don’t understand,” she said slowly, “how you knew all of this. How do you have so many details?Whydo you know so many details?”

I took a deep breath, prepared to share the last bit of information that no one knew but me. This wasn’t something found in the police records or something that Willis would be able to corroborate. And as usual, Noemi was too damn smart.
