“What about our inside guy? What does he know?”

“He hasn’t checked in today.”

“Then get him on the phone,” I snapped. Breaking protocol again. What the fuck was wrong with me?

We never called him—he always called us, and it was only when he had something to say.

At first, Fabian looked at me like I’d lost my mind before his expression changed to something close to compassion. “I know you’re worried about your nephew but callinghimcould really screw things up. Besides, if he had any intel about Darion’s disappearance, he would have already reported it.”

He was right. Of course he was.

“So, I’m supposed to just sit back and wait?”

Fabian shrugged. “We don’t have a choice right now. Maybe he’s delayed for other reasons. Maybe his car broke down. Maybe he decided he was safer on his own.”

“Fuck that. That kid couldn’t plan a trip to the grocery store.”

I tried to pass my worry off as concern that Darion was too stupid to make this work on his own, but the truth was... he was just a kid. A dumb kid who got involved in a world he didn’t belong in.

He owed me a favor because I saved his fucking life a few months ago. When I needed someone to keep an eye on Lilly, I made the deal with Gabriel as part of our reconciliation. A “favor” Gabriel owed me for introducing him to Stefan and his cyber skimming software program. Gabriel would take Darion under his wing, show him the ropes, let him dabble at being on the inside, but I knew Gabriel, and I knew he’d get a good read on Darion’s capabilities.

Hell, if I thought Darion could take his place as a leader on anyone’s team, I’d train him myself. As a part of Gabriel’s group, even at the lowest level, he could give me the basic information I needed. He wasn’t the trusted inside man I relied on for the heavy hitting information that was the most useful to me.

That man had been in place for years. He’d become a trusted member of Gabriel’s empire and Fabian was right. I couldn’t take a chance on blowing his cover. I had to wait. If he had information, he’d get it to me. I wouldn’t have to pry it out of him.

The idea that he didn’t know anything about Darion’s whereabouts increased my anxiety.

If Gabriel didn’t have Darion, then where thefuckwas he?
