“We don’t have anything concrete yet. We haven’t traced the numbers, but we got some good footage of the helicopters when they flew by. I thought you might want to see them.”

I waited while he pulled it up, barely containing my impatience.

“We were able to enlarge the shots and zoom in on some faces. Here’s what I have.”

I looked at still shots of men with headgear and goggles, pilots and men in firing positions. I didn’t recognize anyone in the first three pictures. When the fourth was revealed, I leaned forward to get a clearer look.

One thing about men in my profession, though there were many of us, very few had total anonymity.

Dante Calegari was an enigma.

The man in the photo wasn’t.

My eyes went straight to Dante’s.

I spun the laptop around so he could see the image.

He took one look, put his hands in his pockets, and turned to stand in front of the fireplace.

“Leave us alone,” I ordered.

They didn’t wait for me to tell them twice.

“You know him?” I asked Dante as soon as Timmy and crew left the room. “Because I don’t. I knowwho he is, but I’ve never done business with him. I’ve never met him. Until today, I didn’t consider him an enemy, so I have no fucking clue why he would want to make a move like this. Which makes me think—”

“He’s not here for you.”

Already, Dante was on his way out the door.

“We need to leave,” he said over his shoulder.

I nearly jumped across the table to get in his way. “He shot up my home. He put Lilly and my people at risk. We don’t have to be friends, Calegari, but you need to tell me what thefuckthis was all about.”

“He wants me dead. There’s nothing else you need to know.”

“Tell me.”

He spun around with an uncharacteristic display of emotion. “No.Youtell me. Tell me who it was that convinced you I was coming to kill you.”

Dante had dots I couldn’t connect. “What the hell does that have to do with anything now?”

He ran a frustrated hand through his hair. “Because these aren’t two separate incidents. It’s all part of one man’s game.”

My eyes narrowed. “Why?”

“To do what he’s done. To draw me out. To get me out of hiding. You fell into his trap. So did I. He convinced you I was coming to kill you, didn’t he?”

“He had credible information.”

“He did. He’s very good at that.Whatdid he tell you?”

I hesitated, but Dante pressed for information. “People we love are in danger. You have to tell me what you know or I can’t help you.”

Help me? I didn’t need his fucking help, not until he showed up in my house andhisenemy decided to blow the hell out of it. I thought about Lilly - about how she could have been standing in front of one of those damn floor-to-ceiling windows I loved so damn much, about how she could have been out walking around the perimeter when the helicopters delivered their message.

I swallowed my pride in favor of the feelings I had for her.

“He told me you were going to kill me because you were convinced that I had uncovered some information from Noemi’s past and that I had somehow used that information to hurt her.”
