“Yeah, it was.”

More silence. And the distinct chill in the air wasn’t just from the October weather.

He opened the car door for me, then walked around to take his seat. This was a different vehicle than what he’d driven last night. The European sports car was replaced with a tricked-out SUV with keyless ignition. As soon as he put his hand on the wheel, I covered it with mine.

“Did I do something to make you angry?”

He shook his head. “I’m not angry. Not with you.”

“Then at what?”

Gabriel pulled my hand to his lips and ran his lips across my knuckles. If that was his signature move, it would become my kryptonite.

“I lost control back there. It won’t happen again.”

I couldn’t hide my disappointment. “Really? I kinda liked it.”

He tilted his head. “That’s because you don’t really know me.”

“I’m not some fragile flower, Gabriel.” I leaned forward. “I’d like to get to know you better.”

His growl was his tell. He couldn’t hide.

“Not like that. Not tonight.” He held my hand in his while his other hand stroked the side of my cheek. “You make me lose track of time. I told you I have a meeting tonight.”

“Yes, the vampire hunter thing. I forgot, too.”

“I nearly forgot about it because you,” he tapped me on the nose, “distract me too damn much.”

“I’m not going to apologize for that.”

He laughed softly. “Good. I don’t want you to. I didn’t have plans for tonight other than to spend a few more hours with you. Now I want more. And I can’t have it. And that pisses me off.”

“Are you that used to getting what you want?”

“Yeah. I am,” he admitted bluntly.

I had no idea where my bravery came from. But that was a lie. It came from him. It came from the way he touched me, the way he spoke to me, the way his eyes never left me.

“And you want me?”

“Fuck, yeah, I want you,” he groaned against the palm of my hand. “But not tonight, sweetheart. I have to go, and you deserve much more than a quickie in the back seat.”

I smiled at him while I pushed a boyish lock of hair back into place. “You’re damn right I do.”

He laughed heartily and pushed his lips against my palm again. “And you shall have it.”

I held back the “when” that tried to burst from my lips. Gabriel dropped a soft kiss on the tip of my nose. “Soon,” he murmured. “Don’t give up on me, Suzanne.”

Why would I give up on him? Sure, we’d just met, but this... this had potential. He had to feel it, too.

“I’m not going anywhere,” I whispered.
