He leaned down into my view. “You look ready to run. Am I that intimidating?”
I shook my head. “You’re that good looking.”
He did laugh out loud that time, making me want to hide even more as all the nosey heads turned to look at us.
As far as first meetings went, this was a train wreck. He’d caught me off guard, not that the on guard me was any more composed. I had to turn this speeding car around... somehow. But I only knew how to be myself, so that’s what he’d get.
“I am sorry.” I flashed him a genuine smile. “I don’t usually...”

“Stare at people that way. I like to people watch and you—”

Our eyes met, and it was like he wasn’t even listening to me. He stared so intently at my mouth.Did I have food stuck in my teeth?

I felt the blush cover my cheeks again. “I complimented you first.”
His eyes narrowed. “I didn’t know we were keeping score, but that’s okay. I have time. I’ll win.”
It was my turn to laugh. “Because I’m all that?”
“No,” he said in a husky whisper as he leaned across the table. “Because I don’t lose.”
I didn’t even know what was happening. A gorgeous hunk picked my table to sit at because he’d caught me staring at him, and now we were going to have a contest to see who could compliment who the most?
I couldn’t help myself. I giggled. Like a ten-year-old schoolgirl, I giggled. And then the giggle became outright laughter. “This is bizarre. How about we start over? Hello. I’m Suzanne.”
He tilted his head and gave me that dazzling smile again. “Hello, Suzanne. I’m Gabriel.”
