“This is better than I was expecting.”

Preston eyed me doubtfully. “Is it? I guess I should tell you…I’ve been told that the pipes are noisy. They’re in the wall right behind your room.”

“What, like hot water pipes?”

He nodded. “Yeah, I think so.”

“It’s alright. I’ve got a white noise app—I can use that if it gets loud when I’m trying to sleep.” I wasn’t concerned. I had my own room, and I was at university at last. Someone had already set my computer on the desk, and my few boxes were neatly stacked in the corner of the room, ready to unpack. “This is good, honestly.”

“Good. I’ll leave you to get settled in, then.” He paused in the doorway, giving me a smile. “Do you want to swap numbers?”

“Yeah. That’d be good. Thanks.”

When he’d disappeared, I dumped my bag on the bed and got to work unpacking my boxes. Once everything was in place, I headed back downstairs and into the kitchen. I pulled up my family group chat and tapped out a message to say I’d arrived safely. That done, I explored the kitchen, discovering my allocated cupboard and fridge space in the kitchen. I placed what few items I had inside, but the shelves were still practically bare when I was done. At this point in time, I didn’t have much in the way of foodstuffs. There’d been a mix-up with my student loan, thanks to my dad’s recent change in job situation, so one of my priorities was to rectify that as soon as possible.

But that was a worry for tomorrow. For now, nothing could bring down my mood. I was finally here in London, a uni student at last, and I needed to get to know my housemates and whoever else was going to be a regular visitor here.

Ander had left by the time I made it back into the lounge.

“Wanna play?” Travis held up a PS5 controller, waving it at me. “It’s a rite of passage for the new housemates.”

Taking a seat next to him on the sofa, I grinned at the surprising realisation that I was already feeling at home here. “Yeah. What are we playing?”

I was completely engrossed in what was happening on the screen when the front door slammed loudly, so I barely paid the noise any attention. The game was at a crucial point, with Travis leaning forward next to me and swearing loudly at the TV as our characters ducked down behind a wall to escape the heavy fire we’d been under.

The next second, though, I heard a low, angry voice coming from the direction of the door.

“What’shedoing here?”

The game was suddenly forgotten as my head flew up, my eyes meeting a pair of enraged blue ones.

Fuck.

The guy from the car park was here.
